The Purchase of the Alagoas Polo by Petrobras by Origem Energia Launched an Integrated Complex with Fields, Pipelines, and a Gas Plant, but the Rapid Operational Success Was Followed by a Security Crisis That Raised an Alert.
The sale of the Alagoas Polo by Petrobras in 2022 was not just another deal in the oil and gas sector. The US$ 300 million transaction gave rise to a true “mini-Petrobras” in the Northeast, with the buyer, Origem Energia, taking control of an Integrated Complex with Fields, Pipelines, and a Gas Plant.
The company, founded by Luiz Felipe Coutinho and supported by the Prisma Capital fund, quickly tripled production and secured major clients. However, in 2024, an intervention by the agency regulator due to safety failures halted operations, demonstrating that the path to becoming a giant is fraught with challenges.
The Sale of the Alagoas Polo by Petrobras in 2022
The sale of the Alagoas Polo was part of Petrobras’ strategy to divest from terrestrial fields to focus on high-return pre-salt projects. The buyer was Origem Energia, a company founded in 2017 to take advantage of the opening gas market in Brazil.

The contract was signed on July 5, 2021, and the transaction, valued at US$ 300 million, was officially completed on February 4, 2022. The following day, Origem Energia took full operational control of the polo.
What Was Purchased? An Integrated Complex with Fields, Pipelines, and a Gas Plant

The key differentiator of the Alagoas Polo is its self-sufficient structure. The package acquired by Origem Energia included not just the producing fields but all the necessary infrastructure to operate, justifying the nickname “mini-Petrobras”.
The asset is an Integrated Complex with Fields, Pipelines, and a Gas Plant, and includes:
- Seven Production Fields: Six on land and one in shallow waters (Paru).
- A Natural Gas Processing Unit (UPGN): With a capacity to process 2 million cubic meters per day.
- A network of 230 km of pipelines to transport production.
The Operational Turnaround: How Origem Energia Tripled Production
Shortly after taking control, Origem Energia launched an aggressive campaign to revitalize the fields. The company reopened wells that were closed, and according to communications from the company itself, results were immediate.
In July 2022, just five months after starting operations, the gas production from the polo had already tripled, jumping from 550,000 to over 1 million cubic meters per day. With more gas available, the company secured significant contracts in the free market to supply giants like Vale and CSN.
The Crisis of 2024: The Intervention of ANP and the Halt Due to Safety Failures

However, the path of success suffered a major blow in mid-2024. An inspection by the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), conducted between June 10 and 14, 2024, found “critical deviations” and “grave and imminent risk situations” at the facilities.
The failures, which included problems with emergency systems and defective valves, led ANP to interdict and completely halt production in part of the polo starting June 16. Operations were only gradually resumed from July 22, 2024, after the company began to meet the agency’s requirements.
The Future of the “Mini-Petrobras”: Growth Plans and Risks
The incident with ANP raised an alert about the risks of operating mature assets and the need to balance rapid growth with a robust safety culture. Nonetheless, Origem Energia’s plans for the Integrated Complex with Fields, Pipelines, and a Gas Plant are ambitious.
The company plans to invest in thermal power generation, in a “Reservoir-to-Wire” model, and in an innovative underground gas storage project. The success of these projects and the ability to ensure the safety of its operations will define whether the “Mini-Petrobras” of Alagoas will establish itself as one of the new giants of the energy sector in Brazil.
