Ministry of Mines and Energy states that 83% of the Brazilian energy matrix comes from sustainable sources such as hydroelectric plants, wind power, biomass – such as second generation ethanol, or E2G –, biogas and solar.
Renewable energies are already a major reality that positions Brazil as the third largest country in the world in this segment that aims to replace fossil fuels. According to data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, sustainable options already represent 83% of the Brazilian energy matrix, with emphasis on hydroelectric plants, wind, biomass – such as second generation ethanol, or E2G -, biogas and solar.
According to a Marcos Barbosa, CEO of Krominox, the national leader in the production of stainless steel tubes, to encourage this expansion, the sector has increasingly invested in stainless steel to guarantee the efficiency of its production processes.
Stainless steel can be recycled in its entirety: Turbines, exhaust fans, solar energy capture plates, reservoirs, pipes – especially in biomass plants
“Stainless steel is considered a sustainable and ecological material, and can be recycled in its entirety, standing out as a great cost-benefit, resistant and durable alternative, especially when we think about large projects such as those that make up the structure for generating energy. Turbines, exhaust fans, solar energy capture panels, reservoirs, pipes – especially in biomass plants – are some of the structures that benefit from this material. Therefore, it is important that the steel industry is prepared for the growing demand for these solutions”, highlights the executive of the company, which is the national leader in the production of stainless steel tubes.

The importance of stainless steel for the second generation ethanol (E2G) industry
Second generation ethanol (E2G), also known as bioethanol or green ethanol, leads a global market that could reach US$155,6 billion by 2030, according to an estimate from consultancy Precedence Research.
Considered an advanced biofuel, produced by biomass, from residues from the manufacture of common ethanol and sugar - such as bagasse, leaves and straw from sugar cane -, its production process can lead to corrosion, therefore, it must have structures and stainless steel tubes can be one of the safest and most efficient strategies for high performance in this industry.
In this sense, the CEO of Krominox explains that to produce second-generation ethanol, biomass handling and transportation processes are necessary, as well as the treatment and processing of this raw material, which uses equipment such as reactors and heat exchangers.
“After this stage comes fermentation and distillation, through tank and pipe systems, which must avoid contamination and be easy to clean. Finally, for the storage and distribution of fuel already produced, tubes and conservation containers must also offer safety and corrosion resistance attributes. At all these stages, stainless steel solutions stand out as the most effective and most cost-effective”, he concludes.
