The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) Is Negotiating With The United States Government The Possible Purchase Of 24 F-16 Fighters. The Decision Is Due By The End Of The Year, Raising Questions About The Second Batch Of GRIPEN.
Last year, the FAB commander mentioned the F-16 alongside the GRIPEN in a presentation, suggesting that the F-16 jets could be an option for Brazil’s air defense. However, this official confirmation has only just come now, generating discussions about the reasons behind this choice.
The FAB is in negotiations with the United States to acquire 24 F-16 fighters, according to an FAB official quoted by an American magazine. Although the talks are still in the early stages, the FAB intends to decide by the end of 2024 whether to move forward with the purchase of the F-16 fighters.
One Of The Reasons To Consider The F-16 Fighters Is The Budget
The FAB faces financial constraints and may opt for second-hand jets from the United States instead of a new batch of GRIPEN fighters. Officially, the government and the FAB are discussing a second batch of 30 units of the GRIPEN, but the resources for that purchase are insufficient.

The F-16 fighters are a cheaper alternative to replace the aging F-5s and A1 AMX jets used for ground attack and reconnaissance. The GRIPEN, being more modern, would be primarily used for air defense.
Argentina Recently Purchased 24 F-16 Fighters From Denmark For 300 Million Dollars
Including spare parts, training, and armaments. This is less than half the cost of new A-29 Super Tucano planes. Brazil is expected to receive aircraft from the Block 30/32 and 40/42 versions, similar to those purchased by Argentina.
These F-16s are older and have less onboard technology, but still possess interesting capabilities, such as integration with precision weapons. Additionally, they share GE F110 engines, similar to those used in the GRIPEN, which reduces maintenance and logistics costs. The final decision regarding the purchase of the F-16 fighters is expected to be made by the end of the year, and the discussion will certainly continue to generate significant repercussions.
