According to the newspaper L’Union, which was one of the first to report the episode, the amount available was impressive.
It is estimated that there were over 500 tons of potatoes accumulated at the site. The publication described the scene as the “largest free potato buffet in the world.”
The farmer, originally from Aube but with land in Marne, didn’t reveal personal details. It is only known that he faced the dilemma of sustaining high storage costs or letting the product go to waste.
He chose an alternative path: to share. If any quantity remained, the intention was to return the potatoes to the soil, serving as natural fertilizer.
Unexpected Movement
The news spread quickly, and by the end of July, locals and curious visitors began to arrive at the small commune.
The activity in the field was intense for several days. People from different places parked cars around the mound and left carrying bags, boxes, and even trunks full.
L’Union reported that some took advantage of the situation in a less ethical way. Witnesses said there were those who collected large quantities and resold them for 15 euros per 20 kilograms.
Others, however, claimed to take only for family consumption, with no intention of commercializing.
Voices of the Population
Christophe, 68, was one of those who were surprised to see the movement. He was driving with his wife, daughter, and grandchildren when he noticed the scene.
“We saw many cars around a mound of potatoes and thought: why not take advantage too?,” he said. The family quickly filled the trunk and took the tubers home.
Another case was Dylan, a resident of Saint-Dizier. At 30, he already had experience with this type of gathering.
A few years earlier, he managed to store 600 kilograms in the basement, protected by straw, ensuring prolonged consumption. When he learned of the new opportunity, he didn’t hesitate to travel to Gigny-Bussy.
Christine, a neighbor from the region, also took advantage. For her, the initiative is positive because it helps to avoid waste.
Days earlier, she had even collected potatoes in Sapignicourt in a similar situation. “It’s fantastic because it allows everyone to benefit,” she declared excitedly.
Mountain of Potatoes: Similar Cases
Although the episode in Gigny-Bussy garnered great attention, similar situations are not unprecedented in France.
Not long before, in La Gorgue, another farmer faced a similar problem after McCain rejected part of his production. Considered below quality standards, the harvest could have been lost.
Instead, the producer decided to open his fields to the public. He offered about 50 tons of potatoes to anyone who wanted to collect them.
The difference was that, in this case, he asked for a symbolic contribution of ten euros as “entry.” From there, each person could harvest the desired amount.
According to residents, the initiative was well-received. For many, in addition to avoiding waste, the action helped to strengthen community ties.
A neighbor even commented that, besides being a nice gesture, the measure also served as spontaneous publicity for the farmer.
Reflection on Waste
The image of hundreds of tons of potatoes piled up in a field may seem exaggerated, but it reflects a recurring problem in modern agriculture.
When the market does not absorb the production, many farmers are left with no alternatives. Instead of profiting, they have to bear additional storage costs or face the risk of losing the harvest.
In Gigny-Bussy, the farmer’s choice brought a less negative outcome. The community was able to take advantage of good food, and part of the waste was avoided.
Additionally, the repercussions of the story ended up turning the small commune into national news.
A Gesture That Left a Mark
The episode shows that, even amid difficulties, creative solutions can arise. The farmer did not profit from his production, but he managed to give it a useful destination.
For the local residents, the experience will remain in their memory as a moment of sharing and surprise.
