Reuters Releases ANP Data on Oil Production in Q1; Results Indicated That This Drop Was Strongly Influenced by Petrobras

The data from ANP – National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels, released this Monday (04/26) through Reuters, shows that Brazil’s oil production dropped by 6% in Q1 compared to the same period last year. This decrease in oil production was greatly influenced by Petrobras, due to a decline in production.

ANP Shows Data on Oil and Natural Gas Production in Q1

In Q1 2021, the average production of oil in Brazil was 2.8 million barrels per day, and natural gas production in the period was 131.2 million m³/d. In comparison to the same period last year, oil production was 3 million barrels per day; natural gas production this year had an increase of 1%, according to ANP data.

Petrobras achieved oil production of 2.1 million barrels per day from January to March this year. According to ANP, there was a 5% drop. The state-owned company, which is responsible for 75% of production in Brazil, also saw a 1% decrease in natural gas production, producing 96.5 million cubic meters per day, ANP data shows.

Petrobras reported that it will release its oil and natural gas production report for Q1 today (04/27). ANP did not indicate the reasons for the decline in state production; the report to be released is expected to provide such information.

Shell, the Anglo-Dutch oil company, which is the second largest in terms of production in Brazil and the main partner of Petrobras, accounted for 12% of oil production in Q1. ANP showed that the company, which operates in extraction and refining, produced about 343.7 thousand barrels of oil per day – an 8% decrease compared to the same period of 2020.

Oil Production in the Last Month of Q1

In March, ANP showed that Brazil’s oil production was 2.84 million barrels per day, and natural gas production was 126 million cubic meters. These data show, respectively, a decrease of 4.3% in oil production and an increase of 3.5% in natural gas compared to the same period last year.

Petrobras had oil production of 2 million barrels per day and natural gas production of 95.45 million cubic meters per day – ANP data show a drop of 5% and 0.2% respectively.

Petrobras Returns Exploratory Block to ANP

Acquired in 2017 during the 3rd pre-salt auction, the exploratory block Peroba was returned to ANP by the consortium formed by Petrobras, BP, and CNODC – respectively holding 40%, 40%, and 20% control of the area. The location is the first unsuccessful acquisition in production sharing, recalled by former president Michel Temer.

ANP announced that only one well was drilled in the exploratory block, at a water depth of 2,100 meters and 300 km south of Rio de Janeiro. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels stated that a gas accumulation was identified at the site, with CO2 as the main fluid. Petrobras, BP, and CNODC returned the entire area to ANP in January.
