André Pepitone, director general of the National Electric Energy Agency, says that the average increase in the electricity bill should be 13%
The director general of Aneel – National Electric Energy Agency, André Pepitone says that the average increase in the electricity bill in 2021 should be the highest since 2018. André estimates an increase of 13%, which with tax refunds could fall to 8%, but which will still be the highest rate in three years. On the 20th, President Jair Bolsonaro stated that he will “put his finger on electricity” because it is “another problem” in the country.

These increases in electricity bills would come at a time when the country is still suffering from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy. Therefore, according to Pepitone in an interview with G1, she is already studying other measures to reduce the pressure of energy tariffs.

“[The average increase of 8%] is still high. So we have to find additional measures to work with those 8% as well”, said Pepitone. “We are currently evaluating what these options would be, but we are looking for measures in this sense”, said André.
Influences of readjustment:
According to Aneel, several factors led to a sharp increase in electricity bills in 2021. They range from greater use of thermoelectric plants to exchange rates.
Since last year, the high dollar is mainly caused by the pandemic, which increases the cost of energy produced by the Itaipu hydroelectric plant, which is the largest in the country, which can meet about 10% of national demand.
