André Pepitone, Director-General of the National Electric Energy Agency, Says the Average Increase in Electricity Bills Will Be 13%
The Director-General of Aneel – National Electric Energy Agency, André Pepitone, states that the average increase in electricity bills in 2021 should be the highest since 2018. André estimates a 13% increase, which, with tax refunds, could drop to 8%, but will still be the highest rate in three years. On the last day of the 20th, President Jair Bolsonaro stated that he will “get his hands on electric energy” since it is “another problem” for the country.

The President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, who announced on 02/19 the replacement of the president of Petrobras, appointing General Joaquim Silva e Luna to the position, said that he would also make changes in the country’s electric energy sector. “We are going to get our hands on electric energy, which is another problem as well.”
These increases in electricity bills come at a time when the country is still suffering from the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, according to Pepitone in an interview with G1, he is already studying other measures to alleviate the pressure of electricity tariffs.

“[The average increase of 8%] is still high. So we have to find additional measures to address these 8%,” said Pepitone. “We are currently assessing what those options would be, but we are looking for measures in this direction,” said André.
Influences of the Adjustment:
According to Aneel, several factors led to a sharp increase in electricity bills in 2021. These range from increased use of thermal plants to exchange rates.
Since last year, the rise of the dollar has mainly been caused by the pandemic, which makes the energy produced by the Itaipu hydroelectric power plant, the largest in the country, more expensive and can supply about 10% of the national demand.
