“Suape has great growth potential, and our vision is to invest in a terminal that will create growth opportunities for Northeast Brazil. We believe that more competition in the region will generate value for exporters/importers and attract new cargo flows, helping the Port of Suape grow at a faster pace,” commented executive Leo Huisman, CEO of APM Terminals for the Americas region, regarding the auction process for the new UPI in the Pernambuco complex.
The Port of Suape is located in a highly strategic region for the movement and distribution of products from Northeast Brazil and is currently one of the most important for the national port sector.
For containerized cargo, Suape ranks among the top 10 ports in Brazil, being 8th in terms of volume handled. Thus, APM Terminals commented on the acquisition of the new area for the UPI in the complex and stated it is committed to the growth of cargo movement over the coming years.
The New UPI at the Port of Suape Will Receive an Investment of R$ 2.6 Billion for Capacity Expansion of Cargo Movement
APM Terminals is now preparing, after winning the bidding for the new UPI at the Port of Suape, for the implementation of the projected investment of R$ 2.6 billion in the infrastructure over the next few years.
At the start of operations of the new terminal, the company’s structure will have a handling capacity of 400,000 TEUs, adding 55% more capacity to the port complex. Thus, the Northeast region will become even more relevant in the context of production distribution for the national port sector.
Now, APM Terminals is moving to the phase of seeking the necessary licenses and regulations for the start of the construction process. If the company can expedite this entire process, it plans to complete the construction within 24 months and expects the terminal to be fully operational by the end of 2025, when the dredging of the access channel and the evolution basin is also expected to be completed.
With the application of the multimillion-dollar investment in the construction of the new UPI, executive Leonardo Levy, Expansion Director of APM Terminals for the Americas, believes that the Northeast region of the country will be greatly benefited in socioeconomic development, with 338 direct jobs and 1,300 indirect jobs created, as he recently stated.
