Argentinians Use Cryptocurrencies and Stablecoins as an Alternative to Preserve Purchasing Power and Arbitrage Exchange Amid Electoral and Economic Pressure

As President Javier Milei tightens currency controls to support the Argentine peso before the elections on October 26, 2025, thousands of Argentinians turn to stablecoins for protection.
These digital tokens are pegged to the US dollar and allow taking advantage of the difference between the official and parallel exchange rates, which values the peso about 7% higher than the black market.
Thus, the process known as “rulo” works as follows: one buys dollars at the official rate, converts them into stablecoins, and then sells the tokens for pesos on the parallel market.
This quick cycle ensures profits of up to 4% per operation, according to local brokers, attracting investors and ordinary citizens seeking financial stability.

Electoral Pressure and Reactions from the Financial Market

Since September 2025, the Central Bank of Argentina has been using its dollar reserves to contain the depreciation of the peso.
The goal is to prevent the currency from exceeding the currency limit before the legislative election, reducing political and economic pressures.
When the institution banned the resale of dollars for 90 days at the beginning of October, arbitrage with stablecoins increased significantly.
The brokerage Ripio reported, on October 9, a 40% increase in stablecoin sales for pesos, driven by exchange rate fluctuations.
Lemon Cash saw a 50% rise in transactions on October 1st, shortly after the Central Bank’s restrictive measure.
Additionally, Bitso highlighted that stablecoins have solidified as a “vehicle for cheaper dollars,” as the government still cannot control its liquidity.

Inflation, Instability, and the Growing Use of Cryptoassets

Elected in 2023, Milei promised to resolve Argentina’s fiscal and monetary mismanagement.
He managed to reduce annual inflation from nearly 300% to around 30%, representing a considerable short-term achievement.
Despite this, the peso has lost almost 75% of its value since he took office due to initial depreciation and investor mistrust.
For many Argentinians, the use of cryptoassets has become the main way to preserve purchasing power and escape exchange rate volatility.
I do this operation every day,” stated Ruben López, a stockbroker in Buenos Aires, who uses stablecoins as protection against inflation.
Similarly, Nicole Connor, a representative of the Women in Crypto Organization of Argentina, stated she prefers to keep her reserves in crypto.
According to her, “I do not trust investments in pesos, as instability makes any domestic investment risky.”

Risks, Taxation, and Banking Oversight

The so-called “crypto game” is not without risks, although the quick returns are tempting for many investors.
The stock market in Argentina is tax-exempt, but gains from cryptocurrencies are taxed at up to 15%.
Additionally, frequent and high-value operations often attract the attention of banks, which require proof of the source of funds.
Therefore, experts recommend caution and transparency, especially in repetitive transfers.
Even so, the CEO of Belo, Manuel Beaudroit, stated that “exchange rate differences can yield generous gains, even if they are unusual situations.”

Why Stablecoins Are Here to Stay

With economic instability persisting and elections approaching, experts indicate that the dependence of Argentinians on digital dollars is likely to grow.
Throughout Latin America, stablecoins have become synonymous with financial stability, especially in countries with high inflation and strict capital controls.
For Ruben López, “the dollar occupies a central place in Argentine society, as it has always served as a refuge in times of uncertainty.”
Thus, the use of cryptoassets is expected to further consolidate as an economic protection strategy in light of political and monetary volatility.
