Projections from the International Energy Agency and ABVE data show that electric and hybrid cars are gaining global scale, increasing their share in Brazil, and accelerating the transformation of the automotive sector

Electric cars are expected to reach a new level in the global automotive market by the end of 2026, according to the Global EV Outlook 2026 report, released by the International Energy Agency. The estimate indicates that global sales of electric vehicles could reach 23 million units, equivalent to almost 30% of all cars sold worldwide.

This progress confirms that electrified models have moved beyond just occupying a restricted niche. Now, they are gaining scale in different regions, driven by the expansion of infrastructure, a greater range of models, and the gradual decrease in costs in strategic markets.

China maintains global leadership in electric vehicles

China remains the main force in this market. In 2025, Chinese manufacturers accounted for approximately 60% of electric vehicles sold globally, consolidating the country’s dominance in the sector.

Manufacturers from Europe and North America, in turn, concentrated about 15% of global sales. Even with fluctuations in the international market, the adoption of electrified vehicles continues to advance.

In the first quarter of 2026, global sales recorded a decline of 8%. However, some regions maintained a strong growth pace.

Latin America stood out in this scenario, with a 75% increase in electric vehicle sales, one of the most significant performances of the period.

Electric fleet could grow strongly by 2035

The trend is expected to continue in the coming years, according to the International Energy Agency. Even without new public incentive policies, the global fleet of electric vehicles, excluding motorcycles and tricycles, could jump from the current nearly 80 million to about 510 million by 2035.

Electrification advances, therefore, as a structural change in the automotive sector. This growth also expands the competition among manufacturers, pressures traditional brands, and reinforces the search for more efficient technologies.

Brazil breaks record and electrified vehicles reach 16% of the market

In Brazil, the numbers also show acceleration. According to the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE), the national market for electric and hybrid vehicles recorded 38,516 registrations in April 2026.

This was the highest monthly volume ever recorded in the country. The result represents a growth of 9% compared to the previous month and an increase of 161% compared to April 2025, when 14,759 units were registered.

In 2026 alone, the Brazilian total has already reached 122,463 electrified vehicles sold. With this, electric and hybrid models came to represent 16% of the Brazilian automotive market share.

Sustainability and new generation drive demand

Experts associate the growth with the search for reducing carbon emissions. At the same time, environmental goals have been accelerating the transformation of automakers and increasing interest in electric mobility technologies.

An important change in consumer behavior also weighs in on this advance. A study on consumption habits showed that younger generations demonstrate greater openness to electrified vehicles.

Among respondents from generations Y and Z, 52% stated they own or plan to acquire an electrified vehicle. The demand, therefore, grows not only due to regulatory pressure but also due to a generational transformation.

Furthermore, among some consumers, the perception is growing that vehicles powered exclusively by combustion are likely to lose ground in the coming years. With global advancement, a record in Brazil, and greater interest from the young public, electric cars already occupy an increasingly strategic role in global mobility.

After all, given this growth rate, how far can electrification transform the automotive market in the coming years?
