The Number Of Dangerous Encounters With Wild Boars In Rural Areas And Trails In Brazil Is Increasing. With Aggressive Behavior And Superhuman Strength, These Invasive Animals Have Attacked Humans, Dogs And Destroyed Crops. Understand How To Protect Yourself.
The wild boars, also known as wild pigs, are not native to Brazil, but have spread rapidly across the entire national territory in recent decades. Without natural predators, these animals have easily adapted and are now considered one of the greatest threats to safety in the countryside and forested regions. According to experts, wild boar behavior becomes even more aggressive when they lose their fear of humans.
In trail or dense forest areas, the first step upon spotting a wild boar is to remain calm. The animal senses fear and feels encouraged to attack. Seeking height is the main recommendation: trees with branches above two meters are ideal. This tactic allows one to avoid direct confrontation and wait for the animal to move away. In the case of children or slower individuals, it is crucial to help them climb as quickly as possible.
In open fields, where there are no trees or elevated structures, the recommendation is to run strategically. Throwing down objects with human scent, such as caps or t-shirts, can deceive the animal for a few seconds. This happens because a wild boar has an acute sense of smell and may confuse these items with the actual target. This interval can be crucial for finding shelter or climbing a fence or post.

Defense, Pets, and Response to Attack
If accompanied by dogs, caution should be doubled. Wild boars are highly territorial and hostile towards dogs, potentially attacking them lethally. In the case of small dogs, it is recommended to hold them in your lap. Trained large dogs can serve as a distraction for a few seconds, but this involves high risks.
If the attack is inevitable, the recommendation is not to strike hard, but to use technique with a stick or a long piece of wood, similar to a broom handle. Ideally, apply thrusts to the chest or head, which causes sudden pain and can make the animal retreat. Experts warn: never fall to the ground, as this can trigger a fatal attack with deep bites.
Shouting and appearing larger than you really are also helps to intimidate the animal. Even after escaping, it is essential to seek medical attention, as scratches and bites from wild boars can cause serious infections and transmit diseases. Superficial injuries can conceal internal damage, requiring stitches, vaccines, and antibiotics.
Wild Boar: A Growing Threat in Rural Areas
The species is described by experts as a “war tank of nature”, with thick skin, extreme strength, and kamikaze behavior. Its voracious appetite destroys entire crops, and what it doesn’t consume, it ravages. Being omnivorous, the wild boar feeds on bird eggs, young of other animals, roots, and even feces. Its presence threatens the balance of various Brazilian biomes.
Last month, we reported that farmers in the interior of São Paulo began digging giant trenches to block the passage of wild boars, trying to mitigate losses with their own methods, as official population control is ineffective. This action reflects the desperation of producers facing the growing threat.
This information was highlighted by the channel “Rural Facts,” which discussed personal defense strategies against wild boars and spoke with experts in wildlife and firearms.
Would you know what to do if a herd of wild boars suddenly appeared in your path? Would you be prepared to react or would you be caught by surprise?
