Engineer Warns That Shower Time and Lack of Electric Maintenance Are Among the Main Factors That Increase the Electricity Bill in Brazilian Homes.

The electricity bill remains one of the heaviest expenses in the household budget, and part of this impact comes from everyday habits. The electric shower, present in a large number of Brazilian homes, is one of the main villains: its high power consumption to heat water in a few seconds means that each extra minute in the shower hits the consumer’s wallet.

According to the UOL portal, electrical engineer Alan Henn states that reducing just two minutes of daily shower time can generate significant savings. In a house with four people, this change represents about one hour less of use per month, enough to save up to R$ 300 per year. Small routine adjustments, when added together, produce significant results in the reduction of electricity consumption.

The Shower and the Invisible Weight on the Budget

The electric shower can account for up to 25% of the monthly electricity bill. Its high consumption occurs because it directly transforms electricity into heat, requiring a high current in a short amount of time.

Therefore, the longer the shower, the greater the waste.

According to the expert, a ten-minute daily shower can cost hundreds of reais over the year.

In addition to reducing shower time, replacing old light bulbs also has a direct effect on consumption: incandescent bulbs use up to seven times more than fluorescents or LEDs and continue to be found in homes across the country.

Maintenance and Energy Efficiency

Another point of attention is the lack of periodic maintenance on high-consumption equipment, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and the shower itself.

Regular check-ups every two years ensure efficiency and prevent waste,” explains Henn. When filters are dirty, heating elements are worn, or seals are compromised, the appliance requires more energy to operate, which directly reflects on the bill.

These technical care measures, combined with changes in habits, make up a simple strategy for domestic energy efficiency.

Adjusting the air conditioner’s thermostat, unplugging appliances when not in use, and avoiding the “standby” mode on televisions and routers are actions that help alleviate invisible consumption—that which occurs even when the equipment seems to be off.

For the engineer, a lower electricity bill is the reflection of daily discipline.

The consumer who observes their own habits and understands how their equipment works can identify waste and make targeted adjustments without giving up comfort.

Domestic energy efficiency does not solely depend on large investments, but rather on a more attentive routine.

A shorter shower, a more modern bulb, and a serviced appliance are simple actions that, when combined, build real savings over the year.
