Beneficiaries of Bolsa Família Can Accumulate the BPC, Which Pays R$ 1,518. Discover the Truth Behind the “Extra Benefit” and Who Is Entitled.
In recent days, eye-catching headlines promising an “extra benefit of R$ 1,518 for Bolsa Família beneficiaries” went viral on social media. Many people believed it was a new program created by the federal government, exclusively for those already receiving the benefit.
But the reality is different: there is no new benefit. What exists, in fact, is the possibility of accumulating Bolsa Família with the Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC/Loas), paid monthly at the value of one minimum wage — currently R$ 1,518.00.
What Is the BPC?
The Continuous Cash Benefit (BPC) is a social assistance program established by the Organic Law of Social Assistance (LOAS). Unlike retirement or pensions, the BPC does not require prior contribution to the INSS.

It guarantees one minimum wage per month (R$ 1,518 in 2025) to two groups:
- Senior Citizens Aged 65 or Older, in a vulnerable situation;
- People with Disabilities of any age, who can prove they are unable to support themselves or be supported by their family.
Can Bolsa Família and BPC Be Accumulated?
Yes. Until recently, the value of the BPC was considered in the per capita family income to calculate eligibility for Bolsa Família. This caused many families to lose their right to the social program.
In 2024, however, Congress approved a change that removed the BPC from the family income calculation for Bolsa Família. In practice, this means that the same family unit can receive:
- The regular amount of Bolsa Família (starting from R$ 600, varying with additions);
- Plus the R$ 1,518 from the BPC, if there is an elderly person or person with a disability that meets the criteria.
Practical Example
Imagine a family with four people: father, mother, one child, and an elderly person aged 70.
- The elderly person can receive the BPC of R$ 1,518.00;
- The family, if it meets the income criteria, continues to receive Bolsa Família, with a value of at least R$ 600.00;
- In total, this household can have R$ 2,118.00 guaranteed per month.
This total amount is precisely where the confusion arises regarding the supposed “extra benefit”.
It Is Not a New Benefit
It is important to reinforce:
- There is no new benefit created by the federal government for R$ 1,518.00 for those already receiving Bolsa Família;
- The amount corresponds to the BPC, which already existed, but can now be accumulated with Bolsa Família without loss.
In other words: the information circulating is partially true, but was presented in a sensationalist manner, implying that all beneficiaries would have automatic right to the extra — which is not the case.
Who Is Entitled to the BPC?
To access the BPC, it is necessary to:
- Be 65 years or older (in the case of elderly people) or present a disability that prevents full participation in society;
- Be in a low-income situation, with per capita family income less than 1/4 of the minimum wage (criterion examined by the INSS and social assistance);
- Be registered in the Single Cadastre (CadÚnico).
The application is made through the INSS, not through the Bolsa Família apps.
Why Does the Information Circulate Confusingly?
Catchy headlines are common when it comes to social benefits, as they attract great public interest. However, by using phrases like “extra benefit” or “secret fund”, many outlets and publications end up conveying a distorted idea.
In this case, the headline suggests a new program, whereas the reality is merely the legal accumulation between Bolsa Família and BPC.
Bolsa Família Beneficiaries Did Not Automatically Gain an Extra Benefit
Bolsa Família beneficiaries did not automatically receive an extra benefit of R$ 1,518.00. What exists is the possibility of accumulating the benefit with the BPC, provided there is an elderly person or person with a disability in the family that meets the rules.
In practice, this change represents an important victory for families in vulnerability, as it ensures more financial security without the need to give up one of the programs.
Thus, the promise of “extra benefit” is sensationalist, but it has a grain of truth: yes, it is possible to receive higher amounts, but only in specific situations.
