Although the Electric Bicycle Sales Sector Grew Considerably in 2022, the Micromobility Segment Still Remains Unbalanced. In Fact, Even Though the Population Has Embraced Electric Bicycles, E-Scooters, and Other Urban Mobility Mechanisms, the Success of This Sector in 2023 Is Still Uncertain.
In 2022, there was also a noticeable consolidation of the shared micromobility industry, such as the use of e-mopeds and e-bikes. In fact, such technologies are quite promising, as they allow for a decrease in the number of cars on the streets to encourage people to use smaller and more sustainable models.
However, even though electric bicycles and other shared models experienced exponential growth in sales, the micromobility segment does not seem to be sustainable in 2023. In the United States, some companies are already targeting huge capital to stay in the market, as well as encouraging other institutions to do so.
Electric Bicycle Companies Aim for Growth in 2023
At the end of 2022, the American electric bicycle company Sondors filed for an IPO, aiming to become the first company in the U.S. to achieve a public capital offering. For the company, this initiative could change the micromobility landscape in 2023.

According to the co-founder of Micro Mobility Industries, James Cross, micromobility companies aiming for the global public market have high chances of profit and capital. For him, this market needs more investment and recognition from the public.
In this sense, we can mention Sondors, which, despite a large net loss, was still operating and has the potential to become profitable. In fact, it is going against the trend of several companies in the sector that are closing their activities through mergers and, consequently, do not last long in the market.
Currently, Sondors continues to produce and deliver vehicles. Thus, it appears to be a point of hope amidst an uncertain and unstable market for 2023. On the other hand, companies like Rad Power Bikes are already going public in the American market, demonstrating that they are strong and ready to continue profiting in the micromobility market.
Furthermore, the German company Tier Mobility bought Spin, which belongs to Ford Motor, last year. Thus, the company is broadening its horizons in the shared micromobility landscape and, consequently, inspiring other companies to maintain their focus even in an uncertain market, especially for electric bicycles.
In this regard, it is worth mentioning that companies like Bird, for example, have disappeared from the market due to poor performance in the electric bicycle and micromobility segment. In fact, it is believed that this occurred because it operates in a market that is difficult to achieve profitability, especially since it is a public company.
Finally, all micromobility companies will face a significant challenge in 2023: to navigate the electric car market and demonstrate that their products are worthy of recognition and purchase. In fact, even though bicycles and other smaller vehicles are cheaper and more sustainable, they are still overlooked by a large portion of the population, making it difficult for many companies of this type to sustain themselves worldwide.
