The Number of Oil Exploration Blocks Under Contract Remained Stable, Totaling 246 at the End of 2020 and the End of 2021.
ANP held yesterday (6/22), online, the 2nd Seminar on Instruments for Disseminating Information on Oil and Natural Gas Exploration. During the event, data was presented on oil and gas exploration in the country, available in the 2021 Annual Exploration Report and in the Dynamic Panel of the Exploration Phase. Among the information presented, the highlight is the increase of approximately 38% in the number of exploratory wells drilled in 2021, when 22 were drilled, compared to 2020, when 16 were drilled.

The number of blocks under contract remained stable, totaling 246 at the end of 2020 and the end of 2021. Between 2016 and 2021, 27 declarations of commerciality were made, with highlights for ten in the Recôncavo Basin and seven in the Santos Basin. In 2021, three declarations of commerciality were made, one in the Parnaíba Basin and two in the Recôncavo Basin.
For the Year 2022 Alone, Investments in Exploration Activities Exceed R$ 3.3 Billion
During the opening, ANP Director Fernando Moura also presented projected investment data for 2022, partly due to the Agency’s measures to encourage the sector. “ANP is permanently attentive to the conjunctural impacts on the exploration segment. The Agency’s efforts to create regulatory mechanisms that enable contractors to extend the exploration phase of contracts confirm that it is not in the interest of the Agency or the country for contracts to be terminated, committed investments to be canceled, and jobs lost. As will be evident in the Annual Report, for the year 2022 alone, investments in exploration activities are projected to exceed R$ 3.3 billion,” he stated.

The Director also emphasized the importance of ANP’s dissemination instruments. “The Annual Exploration Report is an important source of information and analysis on the performance of the exploration segment in our country. It can also help in planning and future decisions regarding investments to be made. And, in line with the goal of periodic, simple, and easily accessible dissemination of data held by ANP, the Agency recently also made available a new version of the Dynamic Panel of the Exploration Phase. This is yet another effort by the Agency to remain continuously connected with the development of tools that add value to information and with the society’s desire for quality information and knowledge,” he said.
The Dynamic Panel of the Exploration Phase, also presented at the event, was recently updated with historical data, starting from 1998, on completed Discovery Evaluation Plans, declarations of commerciality, and exploratory wells drilled, allowing observation of the drilled wells that reported discoveries.
