Brazilian Navy Officializes Purchase of HMS Bulwark in the United Kingdom, Versatile Warship for Strategic, Emergency, and Humanitarian Missions
The Brazilian Navy signed the contract on Wednesday (10) for the acquisition of a warship from the British Royal Navy. The letter of intent was signed in April, but the negotiation has only now been formalized.
The document was signed in London by the Navy’s General Director of Material, Admiral Edgar Luiz Siqueira Barbosa, and by Vice Admiral Martin Connell, the British representative. The purchase amount has not been disclosed.
The HMS Bulwark Ship
The acquired vessel is the HMS Bulwark, a ship measuring 176 meters in length and displacing 18,500 tons.

The Brazilian Army has just unveiled a silent arsenal of drones armed with rifles, grenade launchers, and nuclear sensors capable of operating nearly 300 km away, and this is just a preview of what will be showcased in Rio in the coming months with 33 companies.
According to officials, it can be used in various operations due to its versatile structure.
In addition to amphibious missions with troop deployments, the Bulwark will be utilized in humanitarian actions and situations of public calamity. Therefore, it enhances the Navy’s response capacity.
Transport and Support Capacity
The ship can carry troops, vehicles, supplies, and even field hospitals. This ensures greater efficiency in emergencies, as it can also operate with two large aircraft on its flight deck.
Additionally, it accommodates 290 crew members and up to 710 military personnel, increasing its relevance in strategic missions.
Blue Amazon as a Priority
The Brazilian Navy intends to use the Bulwark to patrol the so-called Blue Amazon. This maritime region is strategic because it concentrates mineral wealth and oil reserves, and is also a constant target of international espionage.
In 2023, for example, the naval force had to expel a German ship conducting unauthorized research in Brazilian waters.
Renovation and Training in England
Currently, the vessel is undergoing a complete renovation in Plymouth, United Kingdom. Still in September, 48 Brazilian military personnel will travel for training and oversight of the works.
In November, another 44 military personnel will be trained to operate the ship.
The rest of the crew will be sent next year, accompanying the commissioning process. The transfer of HMS Bulwark to Brazil is expected for 2026, when the revitalization will be completed.
