The Production of Batteries for Electric Vehicles in the European Market Has Grown Thanks to the Amount of Nickel Shipped by Atlantic Nickel
Heading to the European continent, Atlantic Nickel shipped on the last Wednesday, the 23rd, a vessel carrying 11,121.44 tons of nickel concentrate, used for the production of electric vehicles. So far, this shipment is the largest ever marketed by the company during the year 2021. The cargo left the Port of Ilhéus in the municipality of Itagibá, Bahia, where it has been operating in the mining sector for many years. The company is known for producing and exporting sulfide nickel. This is already the eighth shipment exported from January to September, totaling over 80 thousand tons.

From 2018 to 2020, the export of nickel to Europe and the production of batteries for electric vehicles were responsible for moving around R$ 151 million in the state’s economy, where commerce and suppliers benefited by establishing partnerships and contracts with Atlantic Nickel. Alongside the investments, many job opportunities were opened for the local community.
What Are the Benefits Generated for the Local Community?
In the mining sector, the company employs over 2,000 people at the Santa Rita Mine. In addition to these professionals, the company generates another 16,000 job vacancies, which are indirect. Therefore, the state of Bahia has been positively benefiting, both in the mining sector and economically.
Another positive point regarding the large export of nickel is that the company is able to collect CFEM – Financial Compensation for Mineral Exploration. According to Law 13.540/2017, companies operating in this field must pay compensation during the time they are exploring any mineral. It is the duty of the National Mining Agency (ANM) to distribute the amount collected among the states and municipalities where Atlantic Nickel operates.
This collected amount will be donated to charitable projects that can, in some way, assist the local community where the mine is located. Based on this premise, the funds may be utilized for infrastructure, education, health, and environmental quality projects. Just in August, the value of CFEM paid by Atlantic Nickel reached a total of R$ 16.4 million. In comparison to the same period in 2020, the contribution reached R$ 11.7 million.
