BYD Dolphin G Will Be Launched in Europe As A Plug-In Hybrid And Marks A Turning Point In BYD’s Global Strategy For The European Market.
The BYD Dolphin G, new electrified compact hatchback from the Chinese automaker, will be launched initially in Europe, even before China, marking a significant shift in BYD’s global strategy.
The model, which adopts plug-in hybrid technology, was developed specifically to meet the demands of the European market, with a debut expected in the coming years and local production starting in 2026.
The decision signals a historic reversal in the brand’s logic, traditionally centered on the Chinese consumer.

BYD Dolphin 2027 gains more power, increases in size, changes interior, and abandons controversial feature to face new competition in Brazil.

The German economist Wolf-Peter Schill has no doubts: “Electric cars are already far superior to cars with internal combustion engines.”

Goodbye expensive popular car: electric vehicle for less than R$ 70,000 starts being sold in Brazil with a range of 200 km and targets those looking to escape gasoline.
The confirmation came from BYD itself, which sees the Dolphin G as a key product to expand its presence in the electrified hatchback segment in Europe.
This move occurs within a context of strong regional demand for plug-in hybrid vehicles, contrary to the scenario observed in the Chinese market.
BYD Dolphin G Is Born Focused On The European Market
According to information published by Autocar, BYD’s global vice president, Stella Li, stated that the BYD Dolphin G is the first car of the brand conceived from the ground up for the European market, and not an adaptation of a Chinese model.
“It will be a vehicle designed for the European consumer,” stated the executive, maintaining the original declaration.
This choice reflects the company’s strategic reading of consumer habits, charging infrastructure, and environmental regulations on the continent.
Meanwhile, the low demand for plug-in hybrid hatchbacks in China reinforced the decision to prioritize Europe, where this type of electrification is on the rise and could, in fact, have similar appeal in Brazil.
Electrified Compact Hatch Aims At Established Competitors
BYD will position the Dolphin G in the electrified compact hatch segment, where it will compete directly with models like the Volkswagen Golf GTE and the Toyota Prius.
At the same time, it complements the 100% electric Dolphin (BEV), already marketed in several European countries.
According to CarNewsChina, the model is expected to use the same technical platform as the Atto 2 DM-i, the plug-in hybrid version of the compact SUV equivalent to the Yuan Pro in Brazil.
This platform allows for greater flexibility between electric driving and the use of the combustion engine.
The estimated dimensions, around 4.3 meters in length and 1.8 meters in width, align the Dolphin G with the European C segment, which in the Brazilian market corresponds to compact hatchbacks.
Mechanical Set Reinforces BYD’s Global Strategy
The expected hybrid system combines a 1.5 naturally aspirated gasoline engine, with four cylinders, with an electric motor mounted on the front axle.
Thus, the BYD Dolphin G will be able to operate in both series and parallel modes, enhancing efficiency and range.
In the Atto 2 DM-i, this system delivers up to 193 kW, equivalent to about 260 hp, with an average declared consumption of approximately 1.8 l/100 km and an electric range of nearly 90 km in the European cycle.
However, BYD has not yet officially confirmed whether it will maintain these numbers in the Dolphin G.
In Europe, the model is expected to stand out as the smallest electrified compact hatch with plug-in hybrid technology available in the UK.
Production In Hungary Reinforces Focus On The European Market
BYD’s European production is expected to start in 2026, at the brand’s new factory located in Hungary. Initially, the unit will manufacture the Dolphin Surf and Atto 2.
Subsequently, BYD will incorporate the Dolphin G into the lineup, repeating the strategy already adopted with the Atto 2 DM-i.
In this way, the company reduces logistical barriers and gets closer to the local consumer.
BYD’s Plug-In Hybrid Line Continues To Expand
With the Dolphin G, BYD further expands its range of plug-in hybrid vehicles in the European continent.
Currently, the portfolio already includes Seal U DM-i, Seal 6 DM-i, and Atto 2 DM-i.
Additionally, models from the Denza sub-brand, such as the B5 4×4 and the Z9 GT, reinforce the group’s presence.
The brand confirmed the launch of the Sealion 5 DM-i in the UK and plans a plug-in hybrid version of the Atto 3 around 2027.
Dolphin G Is Not The Electric Dolphin Already Seen In Brazil
It is important to note that the BYD Dolphin G mentioned in this article belongs to a new developing generation, with plug-in hybrid proposals and international focus.
Do not confuse the model with the electric Dolphin (BEV), which recently underwent a facelift.
This electric model has been spotted testing in Brazil, is registered in the country, and continues as a distinct project within BYD’s global strategy.
