Facing increasing rumors of a potential global cargo ship shortage, BYD acted proactively, ordering the BYD Explorer No. 1 from International Marine Containers Group. This ship, designed to carry up to 7,000 electric cars at once, promises to be BYD’s additional “weapon” to boost its global exports.

In 2023, even without its own ship, BYD exported an impressive 242,765 electric cars, registering an impressive increase of 334.2% compared to the previous year.

This significant expansion contributed to global sales exceeding the mark of 3 million units.

The Explorer No. 1 is not only a solution for potential logistical challenges but also a strategic choice to optimize transportation costs.

Measuring 199.9 meters in length and capable of reaching up to 15,800 nautical miles (29,000 kilometers), the ship can undertake significant journeys, such as the route between China and the port of Santos in Brazil, covering approximately 11,000 nautical miles.

In addition to its impressive cargo capacity and range, the BYD Explorer No. 1 stands out for its environmentally conscious specifications.

Equipped with an innovative propulsion system that uses liquefied natural gas (LNG), the ship reinforces BYD’s commitment to sustainable practices.

While not as clean as the energy from the brand’s cars, LNG is a less polluting option compared to the diesel used by other vessels.

Chinese Automaker Plans to Add 7 More Ships in Two Years

Wang Junbao, an executive from BYD’s Corporate Division, revealed that the company plans to expand its maritime fleet by adding seven more ships over the next two years.

This initiative will not only strengthen BYD’s presence in maritime transport but also open the possibility for partnerships with other Chinese automakers interested in more sustainable transportation solutions.

The BYD Explorer No. 1 has already completed its maiden voyage, departing Longkou, a port city in China, heading to Yantai.

After visiting Shenzen, BYD’s headquarters, the ship will continue its journey through European waters, marking a new chapter in the company’s global strategy to lead the electric car market.
