The Chinese Manufacturer Begins Production in SKD Mode and Develops a Hybrid Engine That Works with Electricity, Gasoline, and Ethanol, Promising 300 Thousand Cars by 2026
The Chinese manufacturer BYD officially inaugurated its factory in Camaçari, Bahia, this week and presented the Dolphin Mini, the first 100% electric car assembled in Brazilian soil. The plant is located in the former Ford facilities and begins production in SKD (Semi Knock-Down), focusing on accelerated expansion by 2026.

With 4.6 million m² of total area, the first building of the unit has 156 thousand m² and already operates with partial assembly of vehicles brought from China. The current process consists of the local installation of batteries, glass, and finishing, while steps such as welding and painting are still done abroad. The goal is to reach 150 thousand vehicles by the end of next year and 300 thousand by the end of 2026.
In addition to assembly, BYD is developing a new hybrid engine in the country, capable of operating with electricity, gasoline, and ethanol. The project involved the collaboration of 110 Chinese and Brazilian engineers and aims to meet the national demand for sustainable technologies with biofuels. The factory will also host a center for research and technological development.

According to a report from Sputnik Brasil, the installation marks the fulfillment of a promise made to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva by BYD’s Vice President for the Americas, Stella Li. To support growth, 10 thousand jobs were initially opened, with a projection of 20 thousand by the end of 2026.

The company bets on an evolutionary and locally adapted production model, leveraging Brazil’s history with ethanol and Proálcool. The initiative reinforces the manufacturer’s presence in the country and expands its operations in Latin America, focusing on electric and hybrid vehicles.
What do you think of the Dolphin Mini? Do you think it has everything to appeal to Brazilians and dominate the streets with its electric engine and national touch?
