On the morning of this Tuesday (09/30/2025), Santos Dumont Airport, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, was closed for landings and takeoffs after an oil leak on the runway.
The incident compromised operations right in the early hours of the day, leaving passengers in lines and causing a series of canceled and delayed flights.
According to Infraero, by 8:30 AM, there had already been 9 cancellations, 12 delays, and 4 flights transferred to Galeão International Airport.

Impact Reaches Congonhas Airport
The problem at Santos Dumont did not remain confined to Rio. In São Paulo, Congonhas Airport also felt the effects of the shutdown. Between 7:20 and 8:00 AM, six flights that were supposed to land from Rio were affected: two from Gol, three from Latam, and one from Azul.
In addition, scheduled departures from Congonhas to Rio de Janeiro were similarly impacted. By early morning, there was at least one canceled flight and another delayed.
Passengers Face Lines and Uncertainty
In the terminal of Santos Dumont Airport, the atmosphere was one of waiting and uncertainty. Passengers formed long lines waiting for information about their boarding.
Some aircraft were rerouted to Galeão, but not all passengers managed to board alternative connections.
Airlines were questioned by the press about the situation, but, so far, they had not provided an official response.

According to initial information, a vehicle conducting inspections on the runway at Santos Dumont had spilled oil during the night.
The liquid spread over a critical area, making aircraft movements unsafe.
By around 8:20 AM, maintenance teams were still working on cleaning the runway, in an effort to restore operations as quickly as possible.
The expectation was for a gradual resumption of landings and takeoffs throughout the morning.

The closure of Santos Dumont Airport directly affects the Brazilian air network, as the terminal is one of the main connection points between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
