With the increase in cell phone thefts in Rio de Janeiro, iPhone owners began to adopt a curious strategy to throw off criminals. Cases that disguise expensive devices as if they were old models are gaining popularity and changing the way many walk the streets.

A new trend has caught attention in Rio de Janeiro: the so-called “thief-repellent” cases. The idea emerged in response to the growing insecurity and the high number of cell phone thefts, especially iPhones.

Therefore, many users decided to bet on creativity to protect themselves.

Old Cell Phone Look to Throw Off Criminals

These cases transform the look of expensive models into old, simple devices with no appeal. The most important thing is that the accessory does not attract attention.

Unlike colorful or personalized cases, the goal here is to go unnoticed. Some imitate old Nokia models or basic button phones.

Users Report Sense of Security

Those who use them guarantee that the strategy helps them feel more at ease on the streets. “Before, I hid my phone all the time, now I use it without fear,” said a resident of the North Zone.

Additionally, many report that they have stopped being targets of curious looks on public transport.

Case Trend Spreads on Social Media

The novelty gained momentum on social media. Videos and photos showcasing the “disguises” went viral, attracting interest even outside the state.

Some stores have already started selling ready-made models, and even artisans have begun producing customized versions on request.

Despite its popularity, not everyone agrees with the trend. Some say that the solution merely disguises a bigger problem: urban violence.

However, for many residents of Rio, the most important thing is to try to protect themselves with what is available. And, at this moment, the “thief-repellent” case has become an unexpected ally.
