Indian Automaker Announces Plans To Launch The Cheapest Electric Car In The World, With A Price Below R$ 10 Thousand, Potentially Also The Cheapest In The Electric Car Segment.
A renowned automobile brand, competing with giants like Volkswagen, Renault, and even BYD, made a spectacular comeback to the market with the launch of the cheapest electric car in the world currently. This model promises to revolutionize the electric car segment, standing out as the most economical option available.
New Cheap Electric Car From Tata Motors Could Cost Less Than R$ 10 Thousand
Until now, little known in the West, Tata Motors became quite famous in 2008 for two reasons: the purchase of Jaguar Land Rover and the launch of the Nano, which was the cheapest car in the world for years.
The subcompact cost around 100,000 rupees, roughly R$ 6,467 today, however, it soon began to have issues with cases of fire, creating a bad reputation that led to a drop in sales and its end in 2018. However, it seems that Tata has plans for a comeback of the Nano, this time as a cheap electric car.

Several websites in India, such as DNA INDIAN, commented on a possible return of the Tata Nano, transforming the subcompact into a cheap electric car. For this to be possible, it would be necessary to modify the platform, suspension, and even tires, in addition to receiving a more modern design that aligns with the current visual identity used by the brand.
As these are still just rumors, there are no details about engines or autonomy. One speculation is that the electric car could use the manufacturer’s Ziptron technology, with a high-density lithium-ion battery, helping to keep a small package while having a range between 250 and 300 km. This new model for the electric car sector would be a significant difference compared to the old Nano, which had a 624 cc engine and two cylinders that generated only 38 horsepower.
Tata Motors Announces Launch Of New Popular Electric Car
Tata Motors announced in 2023 the launch of its Tata Tiago EV, a compact electric car that can be purchased in India for an initial price of 849,000 rupees, the equivalent to R$ 56,000 in direct conversion. This news is significant as it challenges the premise that electric cars are more expensive than their combustion counterparts.
The model offers two battery options, which are a 19 kWh pack that provides a range of 250 km and an optional 24 kWh pack that expands that range to up to 315 km on a full charge. It is worth mentioning that the estimated range is calculated by the Modified Indian Driving Cycle (MIDC), which is known to be less accurate compared to the WLTP test cycle.
Cheap Electric Car Has A Range Of 160 Km
What makes this rumor more plausible is the fact that Tata developed an electric version of the model and delivered it to Ratan Tata, former president of the brand. It is a unit made specifically for the executive, with the goal of receiving some feedback on the cheap electric car. The model has a range of only 160 km, coming from super polymer lithium-ion batteries, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 10 seconds.
At the time, the brand stated that the model offers the practicality of a real car, without compromising on the pursuit of delivering an environmentally friendly personal transportation solution for the modern consumer.
Even without the automaker confirming its intention to produce the Nano EV to be one of the cheapest electric cars in the world, the manufacturer would be in talks with the government to acquire the factory that belonged to Ford specifically to produce the subcompact. However, as rumors about the electric subcompact have been around for a while, we will have to wait to be sure that the cheap electric car will actually come to fruition.
