Brittany Resident Finds Postcard Addressed to Daughter More Than 26 Years After It Was Sent, Leaving Mail Services Without an Explanation for the Delay.
A letter sent in 1996 finally arrived at its destination, more than two decades later, surprising a resident of Brittany and raising questions that remain unanswered to this day.
The case caught the attention of the local community and the postal services themselves, who cannot explain how this was possible.
Unexpected Discovery
On October 7, a man from the small island of Île-Tudy found a postcard in his mailbox.

The postcard was addressed to his daughter, who was only 15 at the time, and had been sent in 1996 from Barbâtre, a coastal town more than 275 kilometers away.
Despite the time, the message was perfectly legible. On the envelope, a loving phrase: “A big hug.”
The sender was an old friend of the daughter, with whom she no longer kept in touch.
The mystery of who actually sent the message and why the letter took so long continues to be unsolved.
Journey of 276 Kilometers in 26 Years
The father, surprised by the arrival of the letter, decided to respect his daughter’s privacy and did not open it.
However, curious about the situation, he did a simple calculation: the letter traveled 276 kilometers in 26 years and 56 days, which is about 29 meters a day.
The situation raised questions. The envelope had no errors. The name and address were clear.
There were no marks indicating a reason for the delay. The letter was in good condition. The delay, however, was real — and completely out of the ordinary.
Mail Services Cannot Explain
The employees of La Poste, the French state postal service, were also left without answers. The case was described as rare and puzzling.
A spokesperson even suggested that the postcard might have been stuck under some old machine during transport, something possible with the systems in 1996, which did not have digital tracking like today.
“Maybe it got stuck somewhere and only resurfaced recently, after a system overhaul,” said the company representative. But this is still just a hypothesis.
Lost Letters Are Rare
According to La Poste itself, only 0.07% of mail does not reach its final destination.
With the modernization of services, this type of problem has become even less common.
Today, it is possible to use tools like real-time tracking and registered mail, which allow the sender and recipient to follow each step of the journey.
The company emphasizes that cases like this, while possible, are very unlikely today. Even so, the mystery of the lost postcard remains unanswered.
No one knows for sure where it had been for so long, nor why it only appeared now.
Mystery Remains Unresolved
The story of the letter has become a topic among the island’s residents. For some, it was simply a system failure. For others, it is a reminder of how things can spiral out of our control even with all the current technology.
The daughter, now an adult, received the postcard with surprise. While she did not reveal the content, it is known that the message had a warm tone. The sender has still not been identified. And perhaps never will be.
The delivery of this letter is more than just a curious case. It is an example of how even the most organized systems can have unpredictable failures. Even after 26 years, the message reached its destination. Late, but intact.
And that is precisely what intrigues: how something so simple, like a letter, can become such a fascinating mystery? The answer may never come. But the story will remain.
