Despite the efforts of Petrobras and other oil companies to contain the spread of Covid-19 on chartered and owned platforms, the first confirmed cases of the virus have already appeared in the Espírito Santo Basin offshore, more specifically on a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) this Thursday (09) at SBM Offshore.

A “relevant amount” of workers (around 29) tested positive for Covid-19, considering that there were more than 50 of them on board providing services to Petrobras, SBM reported without providing further details about their identity to protect their privacy.

The workers who tested positive and are showing symptoms will be sent to a hotel and will remain in quarantine, monitored and with appropriate medical support.

For prevention purposes, several workers have already disembarked and are being tested onshore; the exact number of people who left the unit and are under monitoring has not been informed, in addition to those who are infected and have already left the platform.

This and other units servicing Petrobras are taking measures to educate their employees on prevention and social distancing, mainly reinforcing hygiene issues. The Dutch company reported that it is maintaining contact with the relevant authorities to monitor and control Covid-19 cases on its platform.
