With plans to launch a smartphone in 2028, OpenAI develops exclusive chips to run ChatGPT natively. Learn about projects Dime and Gumdrop.

The mobile device industry may be on the verge of a radical transformation with OpenAI’s entry into the hardware sector. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s projections, the developer of ChatGPT is working on developing its own smartphone, designed to operate with customized processors.

The organization’s goal is audacious: to create a device that acts as a continuous intelligent assistant, capable of processing data in real-time and gradually making traditional applications obsolete.

“ChatGPT Phone”: Smart Device Ecosystem

While the smartphone is the central piece of the new strategy, OpenAI plans to surround the user with other integrated accessories that expand the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

Among the identified projects, devices that aim to understand the user’s context in various ways stand out:

  • Project Sweetpea (Dime): Smart headphones expected to hit the market under the commercial name “Dime”. They will use Samsung 2-nanometer processors for local functions.
  • Project Gumdrop: A portable screenless pen, equipped with cameras, sensors, and microphones. The goal is to offer contextual awareness and instantly convert handwritten notes into text for ChatGPT.
  • Early launch: While the smartphone is a long-term plan, the smart pen is expected to debut between 2026 and 2027.

Hardware and Local AI Strategy

Unlike current smartphones that focus on raw power, OpenAI’s focus is on a chip architecture that prioritizes memory management and energy consumption efficiency.

Thanks to technical partnerships with Qualcomm and MediaTek, the company avoids developing components from scratch, focusing on optimizing ChatGPT’s local execution.

This means the device will be capable of performing complex artificial intelligence tasks without constantly relying on external servers.

For the physical realization of the project, OpenAI relies on strategic collaborations:

  1. Manufacturing: Luxshare has been named as the exclusive partner for device assembly.
  1. Chip Development: Agreements with Broadcom aim to create semiconductors for data centers and cutting-edge computing.
  1. Market Scale: The expectation is to achieve impressive annual shipments, between 300 and 400 million units.

“ChatGPT Phone”: The End of App Dependence

OpenAI’s big bet for its future smartphone is a profound change in consumer behavior.

The company predicts that by offering intelligent agents highly integrated into the hardware, people will stop using traditional applications in favor of these proactive tools.

The smartphone would function as a real-time data collector, allowing AI to solve tasks fluidly and ubiquitously.

Although the timeline points to a long development path — with component definition planned for early 2027 and large-scale production only in 2028 — the movement signals that artificial intelligence will cease to be just an extra feature.

The goal is to directly rival giants like Apple and Samsung, transforming the smartphone into the largest-scale category for AI in the foreseeable future. So far, however, OpenAI has not set a concrete date for the official launch of the device.
