NUP! PyloriOFF uses patented strain to help prevent bacteria associated with stomach cancer
A scientific discovery of great impact on public health was recently developed in Chile, attracting international attention. A (Chilean) scientist created a probiotic capable of preventing the proliferation of Helicobacter pylori in the human stomach. The bacteria is identified as one of the main risk factors for gastric cancer and can act silently for years. After 17 years of research, the study resulted in NUP! PyloriOFF, a capsule product that also helps regulate intestinal flora.
Chilean probiotic targets bacteria linked to gastric cancer
The innovation was developed by researcher and academic Dr. Apolinaria García Cancino, director of the Bacterial Pathogenicity Laboratory at the University of Concepción. The discovered strain was named Lactobacillus fermentum UCO-979C and was scientifically validated against Helicobacter pylori. After all, this bacteria is associated with gastrointestinal infections and the advancement of lesions in the stomach lining. The study was published in the Electronic Journal of Biotechnology and marked the transformation of academic research into a solution available in the Chilean market.

Helicobacter pylori concerns due to its silent action in the body
Helicobacter pylori can cause small ulcers in the gastric mucosa and, over time, promote pre-malignant lesions. Often, this process occurs without evident symptoms, which increases medical concern about prevention. In Chile, according to the base text, the bacteria is silently present in more than 70% of the population. Furthermore, it is associated with 95% of gastric cancer cases, which reinforces the relevance of the probiotic developed by the Chilean scientist.

Capsules concentrate patented strain, vitamins, and minerals
NUP! PyloriOFF is presented in capsules and contains more than 40 billion of the patented probiotic strain Lactobacillus fermentum UCO-979C. The product also contains magnesium, zinc, folic acid, and vitamin D2, and is described as a source of probiotics, vitamins, and minerals. This composition was created to help regulate the intestinal microbiota and improve intestinal permeability. The supplement is also indicated for celiacs, vegans, and people with lactose intolerance.
From basic science to the Chilean market
The probiotic medication has become an example of technology transfer between academia, industry, and government. Representatives from the University of Concepción, the company Liva, and the Hub APTA participated in the development of the first patented probiotic after 17 years of research. The project also received support from the Fill the Gap program, an initiative aimed at technological validation and commercialization of scientific inventions. Varinka Farren, executive director of Hub APTA, highlighted that the launch was born from a collaboration mainly led by women.
International expansion is already underway
Currently, according to Natalia and Catalina Garrido, co-founders of Liva Company, the supplement is available at Knop and other Chilean pharmacies. The product can also be purchased at more than 700 online and physical sales points in Chile. The company is already working on the internationalization of the probiotic and is considering expansion into Latin America. Additionally, a licensing agreement with the Italian laboratory Sacco Systems provides for the distribution of the product in Europe and Asia.
Chilean science gains social impact
The launch of NUP! PyloriOFF reinforces the connection between scientific research, innovation, and public health. Carlos Ladrix, from the National Agency for Research and Development, stated that the milestone highlights the link between academia and industry. Andrea Rodríguez Tastets, vice-rector of Research and Development at the University of Concepción, emphasized that national science managed to develop a preventive solution and advance to consumer transfer. This movement demonstrates how regional research can achieve potential impact for thousands of people.
In light of this advancement, how can a probiotic created after 17 years of research change prevention against such a silent bacterium?
