Structure of 625 Meters High in Guizhou Province Was Subjected to Stress with 96 Trucks Weighing 3,360 Tons.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, the future highest bridge in the world, successfully surpassed its last major test before opening. A rigorous static load test was conducted between August 21 and 25. Engineers confirmed that the structure meets all safety standards.
How Was the Load Test at the Huajiang Bridge?
The test was a crucial step to ensure the safety of the bridge. It involved the strategic positioning of 96 heavy trucks on the structure. The vehicles, weighing a total of 3,360 metric tons, were placed in batches on the bridge. The goal was to measure its response to real-world stress.
To monitor the structural integrity, over 400 sensors were installed. They measured the main span, the towers, the cables, and the suspenders. The sensors detected even the smallest displacements. After analyzing the data, engineers confirmed that the bridge’s strength, stiffness, and overall performance are safe.

An Engineering Feat: The Numbers of the Chinese Giant

Located in the mountains of Guizhou Province, the bridge is an “unprecedented engineering feat”. The structure has a total length of 2,900 meters. Its main span reaches 1,420 meters. The height is impressive: 625 meters above the canyon floor.
With its inauguration, the bridge will set two world records. It will officially be the highest bridge in the world. Additionally, it will have the longest span for a bridge located in a mountainous region.
Overcoming Construction Challenges in Mountainous Terrain
Wu Zhaoming, project manager, highlighted the numerous challenges faced. The team had to overcome temperature control during concrete pouring, stabilizing steep slopes, and the impact of strong winds. Despite the difficulties, the team completed the project ahead of schedule.
What the Bridge Represents for the Region?
The bridge’s inauguration is scheduled for September. The project promises to boost tourism and local development significantly. The travel time between the cities of Liuzhi and Anlong will be drastically reduced. The journey, which currently takes 2 hours, will be completed in just 2 minutes.
China already dominates global bridge rankings. Eight of the ten highest bridges in the world are in the country. All of them are located in Guizhou Province.
