China Reveals Secrets Of Naval Power: Nuclear Submarine Type 094 Has Technical Data Exposed For The First Time During Celebration Of 76 Years Of The People’s Liberation Army Navy.

During the celebrations of the 76th anniversary of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA), China disclosed, for the first time, detailed technical information about its Type 094 nuclear submarine. The presentation took place during an open day of the Chinese naval force and marked a rare move toward transparency regarding the country’s strategic programs.

According to data displayed on official posters at the event, the Type 094 nuclear submarine has a submerged displacement of 11,000 tons, a maximum speed of 30 knots, and the capability to operate at depths of up to 400 meters. These figures exceed previous estimates made by military analysts, which indicated a displacement of 9,000 tons, a speed of 20 knots, and an operational limit of 300 meters.

Type 094 Submarine Enters China’s Public Agenda

The Type 094, also known as the Jin class, entered service in 2007, but until now its specifications had never been officially confirmed. The submarine is about 135 meters long, 13 meters wide, and has a surface displacement of 8,000 tons, according to recent information released by the Chinese Navy.

Although it has previously participated in public events, such as the naval reviews of 2018 and 2019, this is the first time that detailed technical data has been officially shared. The initiative comes at a time of increasing visibility of China’s deterrent capability in the international arena.

Maritime Nuclear Capacity Strengthened

According to the United States Department of Defense, the Type 094 represents the first “credible” element of China’s maritime nuclear triad. The nuclear triad refers to the capability to launch nuclear warheads from land, sea, and air. Ballistic missile submarines are key components of this strategy, operating autonomously, silently, and with great range.

Currently, the Chinese Navy operates at least six units of the Type 094, with indications that new vessels of the same class are under construction. The model is equipped with 12 JL-2 missiles, which have nuclear warheads and an estimated range of about 7,000 kilometers — sufficient to reach the northeastern United States from waters close to the Chinese coast.

Modernizations Reduce Noise Emission

One of the main challenges faced by Type 094 submarines since their introduction has been excessive noise during operations, which made them easier to detect by foreign surveillance systems. The updated version, called Type 094A, in service since 2020, features significant improvements in this aspect, being considered much quieter.

The new version is equipped with JL-3 ballistic missiles, which have a range exceeding 10,000 kilometers. This capability significantly extends China’s nuclear reach, allowing it to target virtually the entire continental United States from the South China Sea.

New Type 096 Model Is Already In Development In China

While the Type 094 continues to be a pillar of China’s naval nuclear capability, the country is also working on the development of its successor, the Type 096. According to the Pentagon’s annual report on China, construction of the new model is expected to begin in the 2020s, with entry into service anticipated by the end of this decade or the beginning of the next.

The Type 096 is expected to bring considerable advancements in missile capability and stealth technology. The expectation is that this new nuclear submarine will carry up to 24 JL-3 ballistic missiles and feature even more sophisticated sensor and weapon systems.

Nuclear Submarines Ensure Prolonged Presence At Sea

Unlike conventional attack submarines, ballistic missile submarines operate autonomously for extended periods without the need for refueling or access to external air. This is made possible by the use of nuclear reactors, which provide power for months, keeping the vessels in discreet and constant patrols.

This capability is strategic to ensure a so-called second strike in the event of conflict, as submarines can launch missiles from remote locations, even if other forces of the country are hit.
