Camborough Sow from Agroceres PIC had an unusual result in the fourth birth and reinforced the advancement of reproductive efficiency in technified farms.

An unusual birth caught attention in Brazilian pig farming. The case was recorded at Granja Cotia, in Piedade de Ponte Nova, Minas Gerais, and involved a sow from the Camborough lineage, from Agroceres PIC.

The female gave birth to 46 live piglets in a single farrowing. The number surprised producers and technicians, as it far exceeds the previous results of the same sow.

The birth occurred in the fourth reproductive cycle of the female. In the previous three cycles, she had recorded an average of 18.5 live piglets per litter, an index already considered high in the activity.

The new result, therefore, represents more than double the previous average. The farm belongs to the producer João Antônio Bordoni and has approximately 1.8 thousand sows.

Result reveals exceptional reproductive efficiency

The birth of 46 live piglets demonstrates an exceptional result even within technified pig farming.

The high prolificacy is related to the advancement of genetic improvement programs developed by the swine industry in recent decades.

These programs aim to increase the number of piglets born per female. At the same time, they preserve important characteristics, such as animal viability, productive efficiency, and reproductive performance.

The case recorded in Minas Gerais shows the potential of hyperprolific lineages currently used in commercial production.

Genetics explains part of the performance

Genetics played an important role in the result, but it does not act alone.

High reproductive indices depend on a combination of factors within the farm. Among them are management, nutrition, environment, and technical monitoring.

The genetic potential of the animals appears more strongly when the production system maintains balance in all stages.

This set of factors helps explain why such expressive results are observed in technified farms.

Direct impact on farm productivity

In modern pig farming, the results obtained in the maternity ward directly influence the economic efficiency of the properties.

The number of piglets weaned per female per year is among the main indicators used to evaluate the reproductive performance of the herds.

Records of high prolificacy usually attract attention in the sector, especially in a scenario of constant pursuit of productivity gains.

The birth of 46 live piglets remains an outlier situation. Even so, the episode reinforces the evolution of reproductive indices in technical production.

The case of Granja Cotia highlights the combined role of genetics, management, and productive management in achieving increasingly efficient results.

What does this case show for Brazilian pig farming?

The episode recorded in Minas Gerais shows that Brazilian pig farming is advancing in technology, efficiency, and reproductive control.

The combination of selected lineages, technical assistance, and proper management has increased the performance of sows in modern farms.

The birth of 46 live piglets does not represent a common pattern. Even so, it demonstrates the potential achieved by technical production systems.
