While analyzing the area around the city of Leskovik on the Albanian side, the group of scientists found a huge column of steam coming from a mountain range. After a long inspection, it was possible to observe that the cloud was rising from an abyss over 100 meters deep.
Thus, the scientists from the Czech Republic descended into the pit and found a massive system of caves. As they continued, they also spotted some hot springs and a large lake.

According to Richard Bouda to Euronews, a photographer and member of the expedition, during the first exploration, the scientists developed a basic map using their equipment and immediately realized they had discovered something extraordinary. Last year, with funding from the Neuron Foundation, the group returned to the site.
This time, they brought an instrument with remote sensors that uses a laser to measure distances and create 3D models called Lidar scanner, to map the largest subterranean hot spring lake in the world in detail. The results indicate that the lake has 8,335 cubic meters of water, equivalent to approximately 3.5 Olympic swimming pools. Additionally, it measures 138 meters long and 42 m wide.
According to Audy, to National Geographic CZ, the team of scientists plans to return to Neuron Lake in the near future to delve deeper into their studies. He emphasizes that this could have significant relevance in understanding subterranean ecosystems and geological processes. The explorer states that scientists want to observe other parts of the cave, learn more about the biology and geology of this area.
Expedition To The Largest Subterranean Lake In The World Cost 1 Million Czech Crowns
The largest subterranean hot spring lake in the world, Vromoneri, is located near the village of Kuqes, in the municipality of Leskovik, in the Sarandaporos valley, a tributary of the Vjosa River, 430 meters above sea level. These hot springs emerge at the base of a rock formation with temperatures ranging from 40 to 50°C and contain sulfur compounds.
They have scientific, hydrological, geological, tourist, and therapeutic value and are accessible via the rural road Leskovik-Kuqes. The Czech scientific funding organization provided nearly 1 million Czech crowns, equivalent to R$ 238,000, for the expedition, donated by private sponsors.
