According to Gartner’s Forecast, 6 Million Electric Cars Will Be Sold in 2022
According to the forecast by the consulting firm Gartner, about six million electric cars will be sold in 2022. During the United Nations Climate Change Conference of 2021 (COP26), which took place in November, the Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Council accepted the premise that car manufacturers and other automakers would commit to selling only zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

This has pressured the automotive segment to prepare for decarbonizing transportation and promote the use of electric cars, as “they are an important technology to help reduce CO² emissions in the transportation sector,” says Jonathan Davenport, Research Director at Gartner.
The director also commented on the chip shortage that is affecting the production of electric cars and will impact 2022, noting that “while shipments of vans and trucks are currently small, they will grow rapidly in companies as business owners identify new financial and environmental benefits in electrifying their fleets,” he states.

According to Gartner’s expectations, electric cars will account for 95% of the total shipments of electric vehicles this year, while the remainder will be divided among buses, vans, and heavy trucks.
Leaders in Electric Car Production in 2022
Chinese vehicle manufacturers will need to open factories and assembly lines for the production of electric cars, as the country has imposed a new framework for automakers, requiring that these cars account for 40% of all sales by 2030.
Gartner estimates that 46% of global electric car shipments in 2022 will come from China, placing the country in the leading position in the global shipments market, with a total of 2.9 million electric cars in 2022.
Western Europe is expected to take second place in the ranking, producing around 1.9 million electric cars this year. The expectation is that North America will occupy the third position in shipments, producing 855,300 electric cars in 2022.
“The European Union’s plans to reduce CO² emissions from cars by 55% and vans by 50% by 2030 are a catalyst for the acceptance of electric vehicles in Europe,” declares the Gartner analyst.
In addition to new regulations and incentives provided by governments around the world to promote the introduction of electric cars into daily life in countries, the automotive industry is also investing in companies that provide charging infrastructure and vehicle battery technology to support this transition. Gartner’s forecast is that there will be approximately 2.1 million public chargers for electric cars in 2022.
