Negotiations Between BYD and Ford Are Underway for the Utilization of the Former Automaker’s Plant
The Chinese automaker BYD announced on Tuesday (4) its plans to install a vehicle factory in the Camaçari Petrochemical Complex, located in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador. With an estimated investment of R$ 3 billion, it is expected that the construction of the factory will generate around 5,000 jobs in the coming years. The automaker already operates two factories in Campinas (SP) and another in Manaus (AM).
BYD is currently in negotiations with Ford to utilize the former automaker’s plant, which left Bahia in 2021. Alexandre Baldy, a councilor for the automaker in Brazil, stated that a decision regarding the investment is expected by next week. He emphasized that, even if the agreement with Ford does not progress, BYD has already decided to build the complex in another area of the Camaçari Petrochemical Complex.
The Production of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles at the Factory Could Reach 300,000 Units Per Year
The investment for the implementation of the industrial and technological complex in Camaçari is an important step for BYD. According to Alexandre Baldy, the company intends to produce its first electric and hybrid cars in Brazil by the last quarter of 2024. The Chinese automaker is globally recognized as the largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries, energy storage systems, and 100% electric vehicles.

The shortage of bricklayers is already making renovations more expensive in Brazil and forcing property owners to change the way they hire labor, while delayed projects, rework, low qualifications, and lack of planning are turning small constructions into increasingly costly headaches.
It is estimated that the industrial complex will begin production in the second half of 2024, with three manufacturing cells. One will be dedicated to producing chassis for electric buses and trucks, while another will be responsible for manufacturing hybrid and electric cars. In the first phase, the production capacity will be approximately 150,000 units per year, potentially reaching 300,000 vehicles in the future. The third cell will focus on processing lithium and iron phosphate, serving the external market and taking advantage of the existing port infrastructure in the area.
Economic and Environmental Impact That May Be Generated by the New Investment
With the implementation of the industrial complex, the creation of 1,000 jobs is estimated, with the possibility of expansion to 5,000 workers in the coming years. The governor of Bahia, Jerônimo Rodrigues, emphasized that BYD’s investment in sustainable technology will have a significant impact on the local economy, attracting more investments and boosting various sectors. Additionally, BYD aims to reduce the global temperature by 1°C, aligning with sustainability and environmental preservation goals.
