On February 4th (Tuesday), a delegation from Fortescue Latin America visited representatives of the Government of Ceará and the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex to discuss cooperation guidelines and advance the feasibility of a Fortescue megaproject in hydrogen. The undertaking at the Pecém Complex promises to receive billion-dollar investments and boost the local economy.

Present at the meeting were Governor Elmano de Freitas, Executive Secretary of Energy and Telecommunications, Dickson Araújo de Oliveira, the president of the Pecém Complex, Max Quintino, and the president of the Export Processing Zone (ZPE Ceará) Fábio Feijó.

Currently, the company is developing the most advanced green hydrogen and ammonia project in Brazil at the Pecém Complex, with the capacity to produce 175 thousand tons per year of fuel, equivalent to 0.9 million tons of ammonia), with total investments of approximately R$ 20 billion, subject to a final investment decision.

Fortescue Continues Negotiations to Advance with the Hiring of Local Services

Among the representatives of Fortescue present during the visit are the Head of Latin America, Enrique García, Government, Communities and Communications Manager for Latin America, Sebastían Delgui, Legal Manager for Latin America, Fernando Rizzi, Project Director for Pecém Christian Mantilla, and Country Manager of Fortescue Brazil, Luis Viga.

According to the Government, Communities and Communications Manager for Latin America, Sebastían Delgui, Fortescue’s presence at the Pecém Complex reinforces the company’s commitment to the Fortescue green hydrogen megaproject, as well as focusing on sustainable development and strengthening the local economy. The company continues to work in partnership with the Port of Pecém to ensure the progress of the project.

Currently, Fortescue’s megaproject is receiving the final adjustments to the engineering project that will be fundamental before starting the preparation of the Green Hydrogen plant area, complying with all socio-environmental standards.

The company is discussing with current and potential suppliers the project details involving billion-dollar investments to advance in hiring the necessary local products and services for its construction.

Fortescue Megaproject in Green Hydrogen Promises to Generate Thousands of New Jobs

According to Governor Elmano de Freitas, the undertaking at the Pecém Complex, in addition to boosting the neo-industrialization process, will be responsible for generating 5,000 jobs during construction. The government continues to act to ensure that the state becomes a hub for H2V.

In October 2024, the Brazilian government selected the Fortescue green hydrogen megaproject for the Brazilian Climate and Ecological Transformation Investment Platform (BIP), which will connect projects related to energy transition with funding sources.

Also in October, the National Export Processing Zone Council (CZPE) approved Fortescue’s project in Sector 2 of the Pecém Export Processing Zone (ZPE). The company also already holds a license from the Ceará state environmental authority Semace to begin land preparation works.
