Aiming for Sustainability in Freight Transportation, Nutribras Alimentos Developed the First Truck Powered by Swine Biogas in MT. The Technology Will Be Expanded to Other Vehicles in the Company’s Fleet
Last week, the first Brazilian truck powered by swine biogas was presented in Sorriso (MT). The vehicle features a hybrid engine, which is also powered by diesel fuel. The truck was created through a partnership between Nutribras Alimentos, a company focused on self-sustainable pig farming processes, and the University of Vale do Taquari (Univates). It is worth noting that the presentation of the biogas-powered model was attended by Tereza Cristina, Minister of Agriculture.

According to Paulo Lucion, president of the company, the next stage of the project will focus on improving the model. The goal is to expand the technology to other light vehicles, buses, trucks, and agricultural tractors that make up the company’s fleet.
Through this stage, the pig waste undergoes a specific treatment so that biofertilizers and biogas can be extracted and turned into organic fertilizer capable of boosting corn and soybean crops and reducing electricity costs, respectively.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, the more she travels across Brazil, the greater her admiration for what the production sector is doing for the country. There are several projects, such as the swine biogas truck, developed and carried out with their own resources. “These are entrepreneurs who go far beyond their production. They wish to contribute to Brazil, and that is gratifying,” said Tereza.
A New Production Cycle in Freight Transportation is Being Developed
Lucion highlighted both the social and environmental responsibility of the swine biogas truck project for the freight transportation sector and stated that contributing to the advancement of the pig farming production chain is something that is difficult to explain.
This project has brought about the creation of a new production cycle. Pigs are fed with feed produced from corn and soybeans. In turn, the organic waste from the pigs returns to the production chain as electricity, fertilizer, or, from now on, as swine biogas for trucks.
In addition to Sorriso, the company also has a unit located in the city of Vera, also in MT. The company has the capacity to process and slaughter about 3,000 pigs per day. The achievement of the project demonstrates that sustainability is in the DNA of Nutribras Alimentos and is the result of much effort and dedication from the researchers at UNIVATES and the company’s team of collaborators.
