Toyota’s Hybrid Concept Features Chameleon Paint Inspired by Mount Nasu, All-Wheel Drive and Off-Road Tires Highlighting Adventurous Look at SEMA Show 2025 in Las Vegas.

Toyota presented a concept of the Corolla Cross aimed at off-road use.

The experimental model combines a chameleon-type metallic purple paint, all-wheel drive, a 197 hp hybrid engine, raised suspension, and all-terrain tires.

Called the Nasu Edition, the prototype will be one of the attractions of the automaker at the SEMA Show 2025, in Las Vegas, scheduled for early November.

According to the manufacturer, the goal is to explore a version of the SUV with appearance and features inspired by adventures and light trails.

Nasu Concept is Based on the American Hybrid Version

According to information released by Toyota, the Nasu Edition is based on the Corolla Cross Hybrid sold in the North American market.

The prototype received a unique body kit, new bumpers, fender flares, and a hood with an air intake.

There is also a roof rack with support for luggage and bicycles, as well as mounting bars for accessories.

Among the installed equipment, the automaker cites rock sliders on the sides for body protection and LED auxiliary lights for low visibility conditions.

The rear compartment includes a sliding drawer system, a built-in refrigerator, and a large JBL speaker, items aimed at outdoor camping and expedition enthusiasts.

The powertrain of the concept is the same as that of the North American Corolla Cross Hybrid, which uses a 2.0-liter gasoline Atkinson cycle engine combined with three electric motors and on-demand all-wheel drive.

The total power reported by Toyota for this configuration is 196 hp, equivalent to about 199 cv.

The manufacturer states that the powertrain has been kept unchanged, as the project focuses on adapting the chassis and external components.

Automotive industry experts point out that adjustments to suspension and tires can alter dynamic behavior and consumption, although the brand has not disclosed values or measurements for the prototype.

Modified Tires and Suspension

The Nasu Edition received wheels from the Toyota Truck line equipped with Toyo Open Country A/T III tires, a model recommended for use on different types of terrain.

The suspension has been raised, increasing ground clearance and the ability to overcome obstacles.

Toyota did not detail how much the height was increased nor disclosed the vehicle’s approach and departure angles.

According to the company, the objective is to demonstrate how relatively simple modifications can enhance the SUV’s versatility without compromising its drivability in urban areas.

Japanese Inspiration and Chameleon Paint

The concept references Mount Nasu, a region in Japan known for its trails, hot springs, and mountain landscapes.

The color chosen for the vehicle, a metallic purple with variation in shade depending on the light, relates to the name “nasu,” which also means “eggplant” in Japanese.

The exterior finish includes yellow towing hooks, matte black trims, and underbody protectors.

Rectangular auxiliary lights have been installed at the top of the front grille and on the bumper, according to technical information published by the brand.

The luggage compartment has been adapted with sliding drawers for tools and utensils.

There is also a built-in refrigerator and a portable JBL speaker.

The cabin has received courtesy lighting projected on the floor and illuminated door sills.

According to Toyota, the project was developed by the Service Parts and Accessories Development division, which is responsible for creating and validating components that may eventually integrate the brand’s official accessories catalog.

There is no confirmation that the complete package will be produced in series.

Differences Compared to the Brazilian Corolla Cross

The Nasu Edition is based on the hybrid specification with all-wheel drive available in the United States.

In Brazil, the Corolla Cross hybrid uses similar engine configuration but with front-wheel drive and tuning aimed at urban use.

Besides the drive type, the American concept adopts all-terrain tires and raised suspension, which brings it closer to a light off-road profile.

According to automotive industry analysts, the changes applied to the Nasu Edition highlight the trend of automakers to explore adventure-oriented versions in urban SUVs without deeply altering the mechanical set.

Toyota confirmed that the Nasu Edition will be displayed at the SEMA Show 2025, an annual event that gathers manufacturers and specialists in automotive accessories.

The concept aims to gauge public interest and test aftermarket solutions aimed at consumers who use SUVs for mixed routes.

According to official statements, the model will not be sold as a limited edition or regular version.

Some solutions, however, may serve as a basis for future accessories approved by the automaker.

Market Trend

In recent years, automakers have been introducing concept versions with adventurous appearances at international fairs.

According to experts, the movement seeks to cater to consumers looking for SUVs with robust design while maintaining comfort and fuel efficiency suitable for urban use.

The Corolla Cross Nasu Edition fits this context by adopting visual and functional elements of a vehicle prepared for rough terrains, without altering the known hybrid’s technical base.

Toyota did not specify whether it intends to showcase the concept in other markets beyond North America or if there are plans to offer similar accessories in other regions.

Given the expansion of this type of proposal, the trend is that more manufacturers will present design studies with off-road visuals at upcoming trade shows.

What solutions of this type of customization do you consider most useful in hybrid SUVs aimed at daily and occasional off-road use?
