Croatia is facing a severe labour shortage, as revealed in the latest report by the European Labour Authority (EURES). The survey, which assesses the availability of workers in several European Union countries, found that Croatia is facing significant shortages in 30 different occupations across the country. This scenario, while challenging for the Croatian economy, is generating jobs for foreigners, including Brazilians.

Sectors with the greatest labor shortage

According to the EURES report, the sectors most affected by labor shortages Work in Croatia includes construction, crafts, food production, hospitality, information technology and specialized trade.

Among the most critical occupations are construction workers, operators of cranes, hoists and related equipment, drivers of heavy trucks and semi-trucks, and mechanics and electronics service providers.

The list of job openings continues with power line installers and repairers, electrical mechanics and installers, construction electricians and related professionals, motor vehicle mechanics and repairers, metalworking machine tool adjusters and operators, and welders and flame cutters.

Other professionals in high demand include painters and related laborers, plumbers and pipefitters, roofers, carpenters and joiners, bricklayers, stonecutters, splitters and carvers, waiters, cooks and related food preparers, and systems administrators.

This wide range of professions in deficit offers an excellent opportunity for Brazilians who wish to work in Croatia, especially in areas where the demand for labor is high.

Labor shortage and imbalance in Croatia

A closer look at the situation on the Croatian labor market reveals an interesting phenomenon.

In May, the Croatian Employment Statistics (CES) recorded a total of 88.300 unemployed people.

However, the number of job vacancies available in the same period was almost 125 thousand.

This means that even if every unemployed person in the country took a job, there would still be a surplus of 36.700 vacancies not filled.

This imbalance points to a lack of alignment between labor market policies and the real needs of the sector.

Statistics indicate that there is a significant mismatch between the skills of available workers and the requirements of open job openings.

Workers with medium and low qualifications have faced difficulties in finding employment due to these discrepancies.

Excess of professionals in some areas

While Croatia is in desperate need of workers in many areas, there are also occupations with a surplus of professionals.

Foreigners seeking opportunities in the country should avoid saturated areas to increase their chances of success.

The EURES report identified eight occupations where there is a surplus of labour, which include hotel receptionists, (general) secretaries, general office assistants, photographers, economists, environmental and occupational health and hygiene professionals, graphic and multimedia designers, and product and clothing designers.

These professions are highly competitive and are less recommended for foreign who are looking for job vacancies in Croatia. The recommendation is to focus on areas where there is a real shortage of professionals, providing better chances of success in the Croatian job market.
