The distribution of outlets should consider the perimeter, the purpose of each room, the habits of the residents, and the power of the equipment. Kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, laundries, and outdoor areas have different needs, while higher consumption devices may require exclusive points and circuits.

Defining the number of outlets per room requires careful planning. Planning affects the functionality, safety, accessibility, and organization of the spaces, and reduces improvisations with extensions, adapters, and modifications.

The NBR 5410, focused on electrical installations, establishes criteria for the distribution of these points. However, the project needs to consider the size of the space, its purpose, the planned equipment, and the habits of those who will use the property.

Planning should follow the use of each space

The function of the room is one of the first references. Kitchens concentrate appliances used simultaneously, while bedrooms may require points for chargers, lamps, TVs, and work equipment.

The profile of the residents also changes the demand. Families with children, users of many devices, and professionals working from home tend to need more outlets than homes with reduced use of electronic devices.

The distribution should also favor access and visual organization. Positioned points help avoid cables crossing pathways and can better serve people with reduced mobility.

Outlets per room vary according to demand

In the kitchen, the recommendation is to install at least one outlet every half meter of countertop. The room can receive between six and ten points, distributed according to refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, electric oven, air fryer, blender, and purifier.

Higher power equipment should have independent circuits. This separation prevents demanding devices from sharing the same circuit and helps prevent overloads during simultaneous operation.

In the bathroom, it is recommended to have at least one outlet near the sink, installed 1.20 meters from the floor and preferably protected by a DR device. Models protected against splashes or placed in boxes suitable for humidity increase safety.

A second outlet can be planned for bidet showers or heaters. The location should consider hairdryers, shavers, and electric brushes, without ignoring the presence of water in the environment.

In bedrooms, planning can reserve an outlet on each side of the bed for lamps and chargers. Another two or three should be distributed near desks, workstations, or areas designated for devices.

When the bedroom also functions as an office, additional points are needed for a laptop, printer, and monitor. Anticipating the furniture layout prevents outlets from being hidden or far from the equipment.

Living room, laundry, and outdoor area require attention

In the living room, the recommended reference is at least one outlet every 3.5 meters of perimeter. The distribution should accommodate television, router, console, speakers, decorative lighting, and charging points.

Outlets at different heights can serve the rack, panel, and indirect lighting. The project can also plan for power supply to automated curtains and corner lamps, according to the intended use.

Laundries and technical areas need two to three outlets, considering washing machine, small washer, centrifuge, iron, and other equipment. More powerful appliances should have specific circuits, without relying on extensions.

In outdoor areas, points need to be in accessible and strategic locations. For spaces exposed to dust and moisture, it is recommended to use outlets with protection rating IP44 or higher.

Balconies, gardens, and barbecue areas may require energy for lighting, fans, electric grills, and chargers. Weather protection should accompany the chosen position for each point.

How to calculate the necessary quantity

The calculation starts by measuring the perimeter of the environment. The presented guideline indicates at least one outlet every 3.5 meters, although the quantity may increase depending on the room’s function.

Next, it is necessary to list the equipment that will be used and identify those with higher power. Microwave, refrigerator, and oven, for example, may require exclusive outlets and circuits.

Lower consumption devices can share points, as long as the distribution is adequate. The project should also anticipate future changes, such as acquiring new appliances or transforming a bedroom into a workspace.

More than meeting a minimum quantity, the goal is to adapt the installation to real needs. A well-dimensioned project reduces improvisations, improves circulation, and keeps equipment close to power sources.
