ORA GT: Detailed Analysis of the Electric That “Drives Like a Golf GTI”

The ORA GT, GWM’s electric hatchback, is back in the automotive spotlight, especially after the launch of the new matte gray color for the 2025 model. The flagship of the Chinese automaker is constantly praised for offering a genuinely sporty driving experience, something rare among its direct competitors in the growing electric segment in Brazil. This assessment, based on practical tests by the Carro Chefe team, puts into perspective what truly sets the ORA GT apart from most, while confronting its numbers and technologies with the rapid evolution of the market.

Despite already showing the weight of the rapid technological evolution of electric vehicles – which are improving at a dizzying pace – the ORA GT maintains its essence as a fun car, with firm suspension, disc brakes on all four wheels, and an instant torque that provides exhilarating acceleration. However, its price and range are called into question in light of the new options coming to market. The central question is: does the superior performance still justify the investment in this compact sports car?

Where the ORA GT Really Shines: Performance and Dynamics

The key differentiator that elevates the ORA GT above many of its electric counterparts is its suspension tuning. While most Chinese models prioritize comfort with a softer and “floating” setup, the ORA GT delivers a firm suspension, “planted to the ground”, reminiscent of traditional sporty hatches, like the acclaimed Golf GTI, in terms of handling. This feature is essential for those who value the experience of cornering and the feeling of having the car under control at high speeds.

This sporty vocation is complemented by a disc brake system on all four wheels, ensuring the safety and response needed for a dynamically oriented hatch. The motor, located on the front axle (front-wheel drive), delivers 171 horsepower and 25.5 kgfm of instant torque, figures that, combined with a weight of 1,590 kg, result in a power-to-weight ratio of 9.3 kg/hp. GWM claims a time of 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds, but field tests have already shown that the car can be slightly faster, easily reaching its limited top speed of 160 km/h. It’s the driving pleasure, and not just the power, that makes it one of the most fun electric cars to drive today, as highlighted by Carro Chefe.

Range and Charging: The Signs of Accelerated Evolution

Regarding propulsion, the ORA GT uses a battery that offers a range of 319 km according to the INMETRO standard (considered the most pessimistic), but which, under real-world usage conditions, especially in the city, can extend to around 380 km or even 400 km. Although this range is sufficient for urban use and even small trips, it is no longer impressive compared to newer competitors from other brands, such as some models from GAC, which offer more robust battery packages.

The fast-charging capability allows the vehicle to go from 30% to 80% in approximately 40 minutes, a competitive time that depends on the availability of fast DC chargers. However, the rapid evolution of battery technology and the arrival of new players with more efficient architectures suggest that the ORA GT may need an upgrade in its new generation to justify its price and compete on equal footing regarding range. The battery warranty, which is 8 years or 200,000 km, is a positive point, although the kilometer limit raises debate about the longevity of intensive use.

Cost-Benefit and Market Positioning

The ORA GT has a suggested price of R$ 189,000, an amount that, at the time of its launch, was more competitive. Today, however, it faces fierce competition, including larger SUVs and models with superior range in the price range of R$ 200,000 to R$ 220,000. This market pressure means that the main selling point of the ORA GT is undeniably its drivability and mechanical tuning.

“It’s a car that I really enjoy driving. I found it expensive. I would buy one of these used.”Carro Chefe

For electric car enthusiasts seeking a more engaging driving experience who prioritize dynamics over maximum range or interior space (the trunk, with 228 liters, is small), the ORA GT is a niche option. However, for the average electric car buyer, who often seeks comfort and the greatest possible range, the price may be a hurdle. The depreciation of electric cars in the used market, however, makes the ORA GT an attractive purchase for those focused on performance and the lower cost of a used model.

Design, Ergonomics, and the Paradox of the Multimedia Center

YouTube Video

Visually, the ORA GT follows a bold design line, mixing elements of “Beetle with Porsche” in the front and a controversial rear, but with sporty appeal, thanks to the spoiler with the GT emblem. Inside, the car offers a good amount of interior space, with surprising comfort for the back seats. The front seats feature electric adjustments and, a welcome luxury, ventilation and massage. The interior finish is of high quality, with leather and soft touch materials in many places, along with convenience items like a rotary shifter, electronic parking brake, and induction charger.

The most debated point is the multimedia center. Although the car is filled with technology (360º camera, autonomous parking, adaptive cruise control, and safety features), most essential controls, such as seat ventilation, driving modes, and even volume for the passenger on Android Auto, are exclusively concentrated on the screen, requiring multiple taps for basic functions. This total dependency on the multimedia center is seen as an ergonomic setback that compromises practicality during driving, particularly frustrating in a car with a sporty vocation. Additionally, the system forgets settings of the driver, such as disabling the lane-reading alert, which needs to be reset each time the car is started.

Conclusion: Is the ORA GT the Sports Car the Electric Market Needed?

The ORA GT is a polarizing car. Its drivability is undoubtedly its greatest asset, placing it at a higher level than its competitors when it comes to driving pleasure and cornering behavior. It proves that electric cars can indeed be fun, provided the suspension and chassis tuning receive the necessary attention – something that Carro Chefe highlights as a crucial point for other manufacturers to follow.

However, the combination of average range and high price in the new car market places it in a vulnerable position against newer and more efficient models. GWM’s flagship is ideal for the enthusiast willing to pay the price for performance and for the feeling of a traditional hot hatch, now electrified.

Does the ORA GT justify its price of nearly R$ 190,000 for its excellent drivability, even with a range now considered “just OK” by the current market?

Do you agree that electric cars are evolving so quickly that a model from 2 or 3 years ago already needs a new generation to justify its price? Leave your opinion in the comments, we want to hear from those who live this in practice and which electric car you would buy for this price!

Tão firme a suspensão que com 50.000 km já está batendo… Baita carro…. Falo por experiência propia e a css ainda nega a garantia
