Leading The Way For Electrification In The European Union, Daimler Truck, The TRATON Group And Volvo Have Signed An Agreement To Install A Public Charging Network For Heavy-Duty Electric Trucks

The largest truck manufacturers Daimler Truck, TRATON Group, and Volvo have signed an agreement to install a high-performance public charging network aimed at heavy-duty electric trucks for long distances. The objective of the companies is to accelerate the construction of charging infrastructure to increase their customers’ confidence and also contribute to the European Union’s shift towards neutral transportation.

£500 Million In Investments

The agreement between Daimler Truck, TRATON Group, and Volvo lays the foundation for a future joint venture, with equal participation from all three parties, expected to commence operations in 2022.

The companies plan to jointly invest around £500 million to install at least 1,700 charging stations for electric trucks at locations near highways, within five years of the establishment of the joint venture. The number of charging points will significantly increase over time, seeking additional partners as well as public funding.

The Role Of The Future Joint Venture

The future joint venture between Daimler Truck, TRATON Group, and Volvo will act as an enabler and a catalyst for achieving the European Union’s Green Deal for a freight transportation sector that does not emit pollutants by 2050.

The joint action of the three companies meets the urgent need for a charging network to support drivers in their transition to electric trucks.

Executives Speak Out

According to Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum, the companies aim to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. However, it is essential to build an infrastructure that goes “hand in hand” with the deployment of electric trucks on the roads. The executive states that the company is excited to take this pioneering step to establish a high-performance charging network in Europe.

According to TRATON CEO Matthias Gründler, it is evident for his company that the future of freight transportation belongs to electric trucks. Therefore, there is a need for rapid development of publicly accessible charging stations. The executive states that the partnership with the companies will make the electric truck charging network a reality as quickly as possible.

Finally, the President and CEO of Volvo Group, Martin Lundstedt, states that the companies are laying the necessary foundation for innovation to happen and for customers to transition to electric vehicles successfully. The President claims that the companies have powerful electromobility technologies and a good understanding of the entire industrial sector.
