Billion-Dollar Compensation, Regional Impact, And Future Of The Industry In Bahia Drive Debates After Ford Factory Closure And Arrival Of New Chinese Automaker.

The Labor Court ordered Ford Motor Company Brasil Ltda. to pay a compensation of R$ 30 million for collective moral damages, a decision that directly impacts the workers of the former automobile factory in Camaçari, located in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador, Bahia.

The trial, held by the First Panel of the Regional Labor Court of the 5th Region (TRT-5), was concluded on July 31, 2025, and officially announced by the Public Ministry of Labor of Bahia (MPT-BA) this Tuesday, August 5.

The automaker still has the right to appeal.

The sentence was motivated by the abrupt cessation of Ford’s activities in Camaçari, in January 2021, without any prior negotiation with the workers’ union.

The MPT-BA stated that “the company ended production unilaterally, without dialogue with the workers’ union, disrespecting collective rights.”

According to the Metalworkers’ Union of Bahia, the closure affected around 60,000 jobs, including direct and indirect employees linked to the local automotive supply chain.

Collective Moral Damages: Execution And Destination Of The Compensation

According to the decision, the amount of R$ 30 million will be allocated to repairing the collective damages caused by the shutdown of industrial operations in Camaçari.

However, the transfer will only occur after the deadlines for the presentation of appeals have expired.

The process will proceed for execution in the 3rd Labor Court of Camaçari, the court of origin of the action, where the criteria for the allocation of the resources and the procedures for possible compensation to affected workers will be discussed.

So far, there is no official information on exact deadlines for the conclusion of the appeals or the initiation of payments.

The Public Ministry of Labor of Bahia (MPT-BA) emphasized that the main objective is to “repair the collective damages caused to the working community and the region, severely affected by the cessation of production.”

Impact Of Layoffs On The Brazilian Automotive Industry

The announcement of the factory closure, made in January 2021, marked the end of one of the largest industrial operations in the automotive sector in Northeast Brazil.

Ford confirmed the end of vehicle production in Brazil, determining the closure of the factories in Camaçari (BA), Taubaté (SP), and Horizonte (CE), the latter dedicated to the production of Troller brand SUVs.

The decision prompted a strong reaction among workers and the Bahian society.

According to the Metalworkers’ Union of Bahia, “around 60,000 jobs were lost, including direct and indirect workers involved in industrial, logistical, and supplier activities.”

Protesters occupied areas near the Camaçari factory in protest against the measure.

In a statement released at the time, Ford attributed the closure of operations to the economic crisis exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which had caused a significant drop in sales.

The company reported that approximately five thousand jobs were lost in Brazil and Argentina, a number that only considers employees directly hired by the automaker, not including indirect jobs.

Despite the closing of the assembly line, Ford continued to operate the Development and Technology Center in Camaçari, employing around 1,500 professionals dedicated to research, innovation, and the development of new products for the global market.

This unit continues to operate and collaborate with other subsidiaries of the company worldwide.

Economic And Social Effects In Bahia After Ford’s Exit

The cessation of Ford’s operations in Camaçari had a profound impact on the regional economy.

The industrial park of the city, inaugurated in 2001, became one of the main automotive hubs in Brazil and was responsible for driving economic and social development in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador.

With the closure, there was a decline in revenue, an increase in unemployment, and a retraction in various sectors linked to the automotive supply chain.

Two years after Ford’s exit, the factory was officially acquired by the Government of the State of Bahia.

The state government announced that in the future it would pay compensation to the automaker, in amounts consistent with the market, for the industrial structure and existing assets at the Camaçari complex.

New Industrial Phase: Arrival Of BYD And Expectation Of Recovery

In 2023, the scenario began to change with the confirmation of investment from the Chinese company Build Your Dreams (BYD) in Bahia.

Specialized in hybrid and electric vehicles, BYD took over part of the former Ford facilities and confirmed an investment of R$ 3 billion to establish three factories on site.

According to the company, the units will produce electric bus and truck chassis, in addition to electric and hybrid passenger vehicles, processing lithium and iron phosphate for batteries.

BYD already showcased the first cars assembled on Bahian soil in July 2025 during a ceremony held at the industrial complex.

The company’s outlook is that by 2030, 80% of the vehicle components will be nationalized, again boosting the productive chain and generating direct and indirect jobs in the region.

Compensation For Collective Damages And Next Steps

With the judicial decision, Ford will have to bear the billion-dollar compensation for collective moral damages, while the resumption of industrial activities by BYD offers a recovery alternative for the Bahian economy.

However, the scar left by Ford’s abrupt closure is still felt by thousands of impacted families, who await definitions regarding possible financial compensations.

In light of this scenario, the expectation remains on the outcome of the judicial appeals and the next steps for the automotive sector in Bahia.

Does the decision to condemn Ford to pay R$ 30 million for collective moral damages set a precedent for other similar actions in cases of mass layoffs in Brazil?
