A Journey of Ups and Downs

The year 2023 was marked by a true roller coaster for Micro and Small Industries (MPIs), with a mosaic of financial results. As revealed by the 10th National Survey “Panorama of Micro and Small Industry,” conducted by Datafolha at the request of the Union of Micro and Small Industry (SIMPI), 14% of companies reported progress, 50% remained stable, and 36% faced adversities. Despite the turbulence, a sense of hope permeates the sector, with 57% of entrepreneurs projecting a more promising 2024 for their businesses.

The economic scenario, filled with challenges, did not prevent 25% of micro and small industries from classifying their revenue for the year as much lower than in 2022. However, cautious optimism resonated among 48%, who considered their earnings within expectations, while 26% celebrated significant improvements.

Financial Vitality and Sales

The financial health of MPIs, measured by profit margins, also presented a varied picture. In 2023, 12% of companies saw their margins grow, half of them remained at the expected level, and 37% faced challenges. The sale of products and services followed this trend, with 16% of companies reporting growth, 43% remaining stable, and 37% dealing with obstacles.

Regarding hiring new employees, the year was modest, with only 3% of companies expanding their teams, while most, 45%, remained constant, and 36% found difficulties in adding new members to their teams.

Optimistic Projections for 2024

The horizon of 2024 brings a breath of optimism for MPIs, with 57% of entrepreneurs anticipating better days for their ventures, despite 17% remaining cautious. The Central-West/North regions stand out for their optimism, while São Paulo and the South reflect greater caution.

Joseph Couri, president of SIMPI, highlights the resilience and adaptability of MPIs in the face of economic adversities. He emphasizes the promising outlook for the next year, with 38% of companies expecting to open new positions and increase investments, a clear sign of renewed confidence in the sector.

About the Survey

Conducted between November 17 and December 1, 2023, the SIMPI survey, carried out by Datafolha, interviewed 708 companies, providing a detailed overview of the current situation of MPIs. This data is essential to understand the trends, challenges, and opportunities within this vital segment of the national economy.
