The owner of Consul and Brastemp, Whirlpool, received the certificate that attests to 100% use of renewable energy in its units. The company aims to reduce the emission of 6,5 thousand tons of CO2 this year alone

Whirlpool, owner of brands such as Brastemp and Consul, is moving towards achieving its sustainability goals. The company now has one more international certification, which certifies 100% of the use of renewable energy, such as wind, hydroelectric and solar in two of its three manufacturing units in Brazil, reducing CO2 emissions much more, an aspect in which it wants to be neutral until the next decade. Therefore, the company will avoid the emission of 6,5 thousand tons of CO2 this year alone, which is equivalent to a reduction of more than 30% compared to last year.

Owner of the brands Consul and Brastemp comments on her achievement

The initiative is part of the company's global goal of achieving the neutralization of CO2 emissions until 2030. The new certification after investments in renewable energy came into effect at the beginning of the year for the Rio Claro (SP) and Manaus (AM) units. The Joinville (SC) unit, on the other hand, expects to reach the mark of 100% renewable energy in 2024. Currently, the index is 85% in the office of the owner of Brastemp and Consul in São Paulo, which had already been certified in November last year.

According to Cristiano Félix, senior manager of Environment, Occupational Safety and Health for Latin America, in Joinville the company already has signed agreements for the use of renewable energy. The vice-president of Understanding Legal and Corporate Affairs at Whirlpool for Latin America, Bernardo Gallina, says that the decision to buy energy only from renewable sources is more a question of value for the company than just cost reduction and savings, so much so that the company started to spend 10% more with the change.

The idea is to consume less electricity and reuse resources within the company to make it more sustainable. The 31% reduction in CO2 emissions is equivalent to planting around 43 trees.

Whirlpool products focus on energy efficiency

Walking alongside the international certification for the acquisition of renewable energy to reduce CO2 emissions, the owner of Consul and Brastemp also invests in the energy efficiency of its products and, according to the same, about 90% of its manufactures are classified as “A”, according to the Procel energy saving seal.

According to the director of ESG and Regulatory Affairs for Latin America, Douglas Reis, there are few products that still have a “B” rating, and there are no products with a “C” rating. In addition, the owner of Brastemp and Consul also provides a bonus for executives on goals in the three spheres of the acronym: environmental, social and governance.

Performance in these sectors is evaluated on a regular basis, with bimonthly meetings attended by senior executives. These meetings take place within the scope of the ESG committee, which covers the Latin America region. It is noteworthy that other regions also have their own committees.
