Drivers with CNH or ACC expiring in this interval will have extra time while the traffic system regulates the changes provided for in the new law
The validity of the CNH has been extended for drivers with documents expiring between June 5 and September 8, 2026. This measure, in turn, was adopted by Contran during the implementation of the new license renewal rules.
In practice, the decision also applies to the Authorization to Drive a Moped (ACC). Thus, the documents included in the measure remain valid until September 9, 2026, without the issuance of a new copy and without the need for additional procedures.
After this period, drivers will have an additional 30 days to renew their license. Therefore, the renewal must be completed by October 9, 2026.

Who is entitled to the CNH extension
The rule benefits drivers with CNH or ACC expiring between June 5, 2026 and September 8, 2026. During this interval, therefore, the documents remain valid until September 9, 2026.
The extension, however, does not apply to everyone. Drivers with suspended driving rights and drivers with a revoked CNH are excluded from the measure.
Understand the deadlines set by Contran
To facilitate consultation, the main milestones of the measure are as follows:
- June 5, 2026: start of the period covered by the extension;
- September 8, 2026: last expiration date included in the measure;
- September 9, 2026: new validity date for the documents covered;
- October 9, 2026: final deadline to renew the license.
Thus, affected drivers gain time to regularize their situation during the transition phase.
Why the CNH validity was extended
According to Contran, the extension aims to ensure the continuity of services while the changes provided for in the new legislation are regulated. At the same time, traffic agencies are making adjustments to systems and procedures.
The new National Driver’s License law, enacted at the beginning of June 2026, amended sections of the Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB). Therefore, the National Traffic System is working on regulating the new requirements and adapting the structure that will support the changes.
According to Luiz Fernando Ferreira, Director of Licensing at Detran-MS, the extension provides legal security for drivers. Meanwhile, the National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran) is making the necessary adjustments to implement the new legislation.
What changes with the new CNH law
The new legislation provides for the so-called automatic renewal of the CNH for drivers registered in the National Positive Register of Drivers (RNPC). Even so, the requirement for physical and mental fitness exams was maintained.
The psychological evaluation, likewise, remains mandatory in cases provided by law. Additionally, the exams must be conducted by authorized medical and psychological expert examiners by the Union’s highest executive traffic authority.
The regulation also provides for the creation of standardized values for exams across the country. These criteria, however, will still be defined by Contran.
Nominal sources cited in the measure
The information involves, nominally, the following agencies and sources of the process itself:
- National Traffic Council (Contran);
- State Department of Traffic of Mato Grosso do Sul (Detran-MS);
- National Traffic Secretariat (Senatran);
- National Traffic System;
- Brazilian Traffic Code (CTB).
Thus, the extension acts as a transitional measure. This way, it prevents harm to drivers while the new CNH renewal rules progress in official regulation.
