Elon Musk, one of the most controversial entrepreneurs in the world, is back in the spotlight on social media and in the press. The latest reason for this? A statement on Twitter, now called “X”, where the billionaire reaffirmed that he fired 80% of the company’s employees shortly after purchasing it for 41.8 billion euros two years ago.
80%, but the argument is valid. This was Musk’s response to a user who commented that the social network continues to function even after drastic cuts to the staff. Musk quickly corrected the percentage, lowering it from 90% to 80%, but did not fail to emphasize that the company is better off this way. The number is impressive: Twitter’s workforce, which had about 7,500 employees, was reduced to just 1,300 in a matter of months.
While Musk takes pride in his boldness, the effects of the decision tell another story. Since the acquisition, Twitter has seen an initial spike in user traffic, surpassing the 540 million mark. However, this is practically the only positive point of Musk’s management.
Revenue Crisis and Proliferation of Problems
Even with Musk’s optimism, Twitter has been facing tough times. The social network lost 59% of its advertising revenue after a mass exodus of advertisers.

Musk justified the layoffs as a necessary measure to cut costs, saving up to 4 million euros per year. In recent days, he threatened to sue the creators of ChatGPT, accusing them of abandoning the original principles of the tool, while celebrating the success of another of his ventures, Starlink, which has already reached millions of users.
