However, for Residents of Boxtown, One of the Communities Most Affected by Decades of Industrial Pollution, the Arrival of Colossus Brought Only More Heat, Noise, and Health Risks.

The Colossus is a Next-Generation Supercomputer, Designed to Train Artificial Intelligence Models on a Massive Scale, Supposedly Aimed at Improving the Systems of Tesla, SpaceX, and Other Musk Companies.

To Operate This True Computational Monster, xAI Installed 35 Gas Turbines in the Area of the Old Factory. Together, These Turbines Generate Up to 420 Megawatts of Power, Enough to Supply a Medium-Sized City. The Energy Produced Serves Exclusively to Power Colossus and the Industrial Cooling Systems of the Facility.

The Problem? These Turbines Emit Nitrogen Oxides, Formaldehyde, and Ultrafine Particles — Highly Toxic Pollutants. And Worse: Everything Was Done Without an Official Environmental License, Using a Legal Loophole That Allows the Use of Temporary Generators — a Justification Considered Weak by Environmental Experts.

According to CNN, xAI Avoided Regulatory Processes from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by Benefitting from an Exception for Emergency Operations or Temporary Equipment. However, Colossus Operates 24 Hours a Day, with Dozens of Turbines Running Simultaneously Since April 2024 — Which, in Practice, Discredits Any Claim of “Temporary Use.”
