What a Civil Firefighter Should Know
- Know the fire emergency plan of the facility
The professional civil firefighter, like the voluntary brigade, must have full knowledge of the emergency plan. The professional must clearly define the step-by-step actions to take in case of an emergency. It is not the civil firefighter’s responsibility to implement the emergency plan; however, they must provide information that results in a well-contextualized plan.
- Identify hazards and assess existing risks
Identifying hazards is a fundamental exercise to anticipate actions when called upon. Reporting risks is very important to generate specific information for the preparation of the emergency plan.
- Inspect each fire-fighting equipment
Regularly conduct a sweep of fire protection equipment. If none exists, create a spreadsheet with inspection dates. As a supplementary safety measure, visit the companies that perform tests and maintenance and check point by point the regulatory standards for each piece of equipment.
- Record daily activities and formally report any irregularities found, with appropriate proposals and corrective measures, followed by execution.
Being a firefighter is about pushing limits, facing challenges, not fearing, and risking one’s own life. Having the bravery to act quickly in high-risk situations to save others is one of the few reasons that make the profession of firefighter one of the most honored.
