Low Birthrate Crisis in Japan Becomes Opportunity for Generation Z. Now, Japan Offers Free Housing and College Due to High Demand for Professionals.

With the low birthrate crisis in Japan, along with an aging population, the country faces a labor shortage scenario that has transformed its job market. This reality, although challenging, has generated unprecedented opportunities for the Japanese Generation Z, who benefit from fierce competition among companies to attract young talent. In one of these initiatives, Japan offers free housing and college.

Japan Offers Free Housing and College with Limit of Up to US$ 22 Thousand

According to a report from the Shushoku Mirai Kenkyusho research institute, more than 40% of Generation Z graduates in Japan received at least one job offer even before completing their studies in 2024 due to the low birthrate crisis in Japan. This intensified search for new professionals has led companies to offer incentives such as student debt reimbursement, subsidized housing, and other attractive benefits.

Companies are heavily investing in strategies to attract young professionals; thus, Japan offers free housing and college for students. Tokyo Energy & Systems, for example, offers up to 20,000 yen, equivalent to US$ 127, per month for student debt payments, with a limit of approximately US$ 22,800.

Nippon Life, one of Japan’s largest insurance companies, has built dormitories for its employees, allowing them to save significantly on rent, paying less than one-third of the average cost of a comparable residence in the area.

Young Population Shrinks 36% in Japan

Furthermore, companies like Itochu are expanding these initiatives. The company has invested in modern accommodations for its employees, with benefits such as inclusive meals, a cafeteria, and even a sauna. A similar space will be inaugurated this year, aimed at female employees. With an active population aged 20 to 24 that has shrunk by 36% over the last 30 years, the competition for talent is fierce.

Thus, Japan offers free housing and college, in addition to increasingly attractive conditions to recruit and retain young workers, especially due to the language barrier, which still makes it difficult to integrate foreign talent.

Although Japan has adopted measures to attract international labor, many companies continue to prioritize local Generation Z workers. This preference reflects, in part, the difficulties of cultural and linguistic adaptation, but also Japan’s tradition of betting on national talent.

Understand the Low Birthrate Crisis in Japan

The cost of living crisis in Japan, exacerbated by inflation that reached record levels in 41 years at the end of 2022, also influences these measures. The increase in prices of basic items, such as ramen, has affected purchasing power, making the benefits offered by companies even more valued by Generation Z workers.
