Want to Get Rid of Your High Electricity Bill? Discover How Many Solar Panels You Need to Generate 800 kWh per Month.
If you are tired of paying a fortune for your electricity bill, installing a solar energy system is the solution. But, after all, how many solar panels are needed to generate 800 kWh per month? We will explain it to you simply and directly.
First, we need to find out the average daily energy consumption. Assuming your monthly consumption is 800 kWh, you just divide this amount by 30 days. Doing the math, we have:
800 kWh ÷ 30 days = 26.67 kWh per day

Solar panels at sea can generate up to 12% more energy than land-based plants, study finds: Researchers from Taiwan discovered that offshore solar panels take advantage of the natural cooling of water to increase electrical efficiency, reduce heat losses, and expand renewable energy production in regions with limited available land space.

The era of solar panels attached to roofs is beginning to change with transparent glass that generates energy while keeping the view unobstructed, and perovskite photovoltaic windows already tested in offices in Japan promise to transform entire facades into invisible power plants without blocking light or altering the appearance of buildings.

The era of silicon alone in solar energy comes to an end with the arrival of perovskite, a material that captures a broader light spectrum, is applied as a thin film, and, together with silicon, reaches a theoretical limit of 45% efficiency in tandem modules.

Fernando de Noronha begins unprecedented energy transformation with a R$ 350 million solar plant that promises to replace diesel generation and change the island’s sustainable future by 2027.
Understanding Solar Irradiation
The energy generated by solar panels depends on the solar irradiation of the location where it is installed. This irradiation is like the “power” of the sun and varies in different regions of Brazil. For example, in São Paulo, the average irradiation is 4.64 kWh/m² per day.
Necessary System Power
With this data, we can calculate the system power. Just divide the daily consumption by the solar irradiation:
26.67 kWh/day ÷ 4.64 kWh/m²/day = 5.75 kW peak
Considering System Losses
As nothing is perfect, we have to consider some losses in the system, such as dirt on the panels, deviation from the ideal angle, and losses in the wiring. We estimate an average of 25% losses. So, we divide the necessary power by the efficiency of the system:
5.75 kW peak ÷ 0.75 = 7.67 kW peak
Choosing Solar Panels
Now that we know the total power, we need to choose the solar panels. In the market, there are different models. We will use a 665 W peak panel as an example. We divide the total power by the power of the panel:
7.67 kW peak ÷ 665 W peak ≈ 11.53 panels
Rounding up, we need 12 solar panels.
To generate 800 kWh per month in São Paulo, you will need 12 solar panels of 665 W peak each. Of course, this calculation may vary depending on the location and the type of panel you choose, but this is a good basis to start your solar energy project.
If you do not know your monthly consumption, take an electricity bill and add up the consumptions of the last 12 months, then divide by 12. This will give you the monthly average. And to find out the solar irradiation of your region, you can use the Cresesb website. There, you can find the average monthly solar radiation at different angles.
