Chinese Company Achieves 34.85% Efficiency in Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Cell Validated by NREL

The Chinese manufacturer LONGi has set a new world record for efficiency in crystalline silicon solar cells, achieving 34.85% in a two-terminal tandem cell. The breakthrough was confirmed by the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and represents an important milestone for the solar energy sector.

Advancement in Solar Cell Efficiency

LONGi’s new solar cell combines two layers of different materials, perovskite and crystalline silicon, and reached 34.85% conversion efficiency. This result surpasses the previous record of 33.7%, achieved by KAUST University in Saudi Arabia. The cell’s structure employs an advanced dual-layer interface passivation technique, which improves electron transport and contributes to more efficient energy conversion, as detailed by the company in an official statement.

International Validation and Technology Leadership in Solar Energy

The result was validated by NREL, the main energy research institute in the United States. The official certification grants LONGi the new world record for perovskite-silicon tandem cells, reinforcing its leadership in the development of technologies for solar energy generation. This type of cell represents one of the most promising approaches to enhance solar panel performance in the coming years.

Potential Impact on the Solar Energy Sector

LONGi’s record demonstrates that tandem technology has enormous potential to transform the solar energy market. The theoretical maximum efficiency of this type of cell is approximately 43%, indicating that there is still room for advancements. More efficient cells can reduce the number of modules needed per installation, saving space and costs, especially in large-scale projects.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

LONGi has been continuously investing in research and development to push the limits of photovoltaic efficiency. The company had already reached 33.9% in November 2023, showing rapid progress. These advancements reinforce the company’s role as one of the leading players in the global energy transition, contributing to make solar energy more accessible, efficient, and competitive in different regions of the world.
