Spain’s Initiative Aims to Attract Remote Workers to Ambroz Valley, Extremadura, Offering Financial Incentives to Revitalize the Region.
A Spain is giving a big incentive for those willing to take the adventure of moving to a rural area. In Ambroz Valley, Extremadura, a border region with Portugal, the local government will pay up to R$ 93,4 thousand (or 15 thousand euros) for remote workers who want to settle there. The idea is to attract digital nomads and revitalize an area that has been suffering from constant population and service loss. Applications start in September, and the expectation is that up to 200 people will benefit.
The Spanish government’s initiative is a direct response to the population decline the region is facing. Ambroz Valley is known for its low population density and for being one of the least visited areas in Spain, which reflects in one of the lowest per capita GDPs in the country. To give you an idea, the unemployment rate in the region is at 17.6%, well above the national average of 11.9%. But not everything is a disadvantage: the coverage of fiber optic and mobile connectivity is above the national average, making the location attractive for remote workers who depend on a good connection to carry out their activities.
Which Remote Workers Can Apply?
If you are a remote worker, Spain may have the incentive you needed for a life change. To participate, you must be fully remote, have not lived in the region for the past six months, and already have an approved digital nomad visa. This applies to both foreigners who are legally residing in Spain and citizens from outside the European Union who are within the country’s digital nomad visa scheme.

The Porto Belo City Council, in Santa Catarina, purchased 11 luxury iPhones at R$ 11,299 each for the councilors and justifies the R$ 124,000 expense as part of a project to eliminate paper, in a spending that draws attention because the same device is sold for around R$ 9,000 in stores.
The offer becomes even more interesting for women, young people under 30, and those who choose villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, who can receive up to 10,000 euros. And, if they wish to stay longer, after two years they are still entitled to an additional payment, which can reach 5,000 euros, depending on the conditions.
Why Ambroz Valley, Spain?
The choice of Ambroz Valley in Extremadura is not by chance. The region is the second largest wine producer in Spain and has a range of natural and cultural attractions, such as natural reserves, mountains, Roman ruins, and freshwater beaches. And best of all: all of this comes with a cost of living much lower than in other parts of the country. For example, in Badajoz, one of the cities in the region, the cost of meals, transportation, and public services is on average 30% lower than in the capital, Madrid.
How to Apply?
There is still no exact date for the start of applications, but it is expected to begin in September. Applications will be made online and will remain open until all funds are distributed. Selected candidates will have three months to register in a municipality in Extremadura and then one more month to request the scholarship payment, which will be made all at once.
This is the chance perfect for those seeking a quieter life closer to nature, without giving up connectivity and remote work opportunities. Spain is showing that it is possible to combine quality of life with financial opportunities, in an initiative that can be a game changer for the future of Ambroz Valley and for remote workers who accept the challenge.
